A travel advisory remains in effect for L.A. County. Anyone who is arriving to Los Angeles County must self-quarantine for 10 days; please remain at your home or lodging for the 10 days and avoid contact with others. If you must travel, please plan ahead. Know how widespread COVID-19 is in the area you must travel to. It is critical to not travel if you are sick. Residents should stay home if they are experiencing symptoms of illness, have not finished their isolation period after testing positive for COVID-19, or have not finished their quarantine period after being exposed or likely to have been exposed to someone who is positive for COVID-19. More guidance and information regarding the travel advisory can be found at http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov//C/traveladvisory.htm #COVID19

A new CDC report highlights how improving the fit of your mask can help slow the spread of COVID-19. In lab tests with dummies, exposure to potentially infectio...us aerosols decreased by about 95% when they both wore tightly fitted masks. Wearing a mask that fits tightly to your face can help limit spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. With the emergence of new variants, wearing a mask is more important than ever. As our community rises to the challenges of compounding tragedies, parents and caregivers may struggle to communicate with others, especially children, about these events, teach them how to decipher fact from fiction, and help them understand diverse perspectives. On this web page from South Bay Families Connected, we hope to connect our community with free resources and strategies that will help during this time of national unrest. BCHD's Assistance, Information & Referral line can also help identify programs or providers that may be of assistance - that number is (310) 374-3426, ext. 256 #LiveWell #WeAreAllInThisTogether https://www.southbayfamiliesconnected.org/current-issues

Today, Public Health has confirmed five additional cases of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7. (U.K. variant), totaling eight cases in Los Angeles County. The B.1.1.7 variant is more easily transmissible, and verification of the variant in L.A. County means residents and businesses must be extremely diligent adhering to all public health safety measures, including wearing face coverings, distancing from others, and handwashing; these measures protect against transmission of the virus ...and known variants. Despite recent decreases in the current COVID-19 surge of cases and hospitalizations, COVID-19 transmission remains widespread here in L.A. County and in many states and countries. Travel increases the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. Additionally, the risk may be greater with the prevalence of the more easily transmissible B.1.1.7 variant. With the upcoming Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, and Presidents Day, Public Health advises against non-essential travel and gatherings with people not from your household. For daily updated numbers, visit www.bchd.org/covidnumbers

We can all be health leaders! In addition to physical distancing and wearing cloth face coverings when we are around others, we still need to take the same precautions we were taking earlier in the pandemic - wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands and self-isolate if you are sick. #COVID19 #LiveWell

Today, The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed 224 new deaths and 13,512 new cases of COVID-19. To date, Public Health identified 840,611 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 11,071 deaths. There are 7,898 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized a new high and 21% of these people are in the ICU. Healthcare workers and hospitals continue to be taxed and overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. The devastating impact... of the pandemic is disrupting emergency medical care due to the sheer volume of COVID-19 patients and staffing limitations. These challenges will get worse if we don’t slow COVID-19 spread. Please stay home as much as possible and if you must go out for essential items, please wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others. This year, many will celebrate the holidays in their own homes because you truly are safer at home. And though the holidays are going to be a bit different this year, that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to be fun. In fact, oftentimes what we really enjoy about the holidays is the precious time spent with friends and family something that can still be achieved safely this year. As we work to avoid the risks of gathering in-person with people outside of our household, here are some safer alternatives to help you celebrate https://www.bchd.org/staying-happy-and-busy-while-home-holi

Even with vaccines on the horizon, it remains essential that we continue to follow the health guidance and take steps to reduce the risk of getting #COVID19 or giving it to others. It truly is safest at home. If you leave your home to deliver or receive essential services, you must wear your face covering correctly and physically distance yourself from others. Individuals with underlying health conditions and those that are older should remain in their home and not be around others unless seeking routine or essential health and dental care. If you are having difficulty breathing, go to an emergency room or call 911.

L.A. County Public Health and Dept. of Health Services remind you that the idea of testing in order to gather is flawed. A person is negative only at the time they got tested - not the next day or the next day. By the time you get a negative test result, you may no longer be negative. Even if you have no symptoms, you can infect others. This virus spreads easily when folks are in close contact with others, not wearing face coverings, and not keeping their distance. All county supported testing sites will be closed on New Year's Day. For real time information on testing sites and availability, please visit covid19.lacounty.gov/testing.

There are 5,866 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized in L.A. County and 20% of these people are in the ICU. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 today is again a new high. Today's daily hospitalization count has increased more than 2,700 daily patients from two weeks ago, when the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was 3,113. Being in close physical distance with non-household members, especially when unmasked and not distanced, increases risk and contributes to easy spread of the virus. Many people infected with COVID-19, are asymptomatic and unknowingly spread the disease to others, including to those who have underlying health conditions with increased risk for serious illness and death.
