If a nerve is pinched for too long the damage can be permanent. Even frequent numbness in the arms while sleeping is not normal. It can be a sign of "thoracic outlet syndrome" which is like Carpel tunnel of the shoulder, a very treatable condition. Leg numbness is only normal if you are sitting awkwardly or bending your leg with a lot of pressure on the back of the knee and hamstring muscle.

Numbness-- Is it Normal? Actually numbness can be a very bad symptom, even worse than PAIN. The reason is that numbness is a neurological symptom. In other words something is pinching a nerve. That something could be a big problem like a disc bulge or bone spur or it could be something much easier to fix such as an extra tight muscle or a subluxation.

This is a great example of a Core Strength Exercise for the low back and Glut Muscles. The Low back spinal joints are very sensitive to repetitive motion, especially with extension or bending backwards. The safest way to strengthen the back and preserve these joints is to use isometric core exercises. In this particular example you would hold this position for 5-10 seconds at first. Then lower the back and rest for 5-10 seconds. Complete 10 reps and eventually try holding for 20+ seconds. If you don't have an exercise ball you can just bend you knees and put feet flat on the floor.
