Repost from 2015, I wanted to thank Karen Matsumoto for making this film and inviting my family to the screening in Little Tokyo. The documentary film features her father Roy and my grandfather Harry, who were cousins and roommates at UCLA together. Although Roy was born in the U.S., he and his family were unjustly forced into concentration camps during WW2. Many Japanese Americans, forced from their jobs and homes, were asked to fight for the U.S. against their friends and f...amily in Japan. It was a test of their loyalty to their country against their homeland and heritage. Roy became a Japanese-intelligence specialist for the Merrill's Marauders (please see the 1962 movie about this special operations unit and their critical campaign to stop supplies through Burma), and he was later awarded the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. After the war, Roy believed he lost his family in Hiroshima and found my grandfather, imprisoned in China, who helped him find his family was still alive. Many Japanese Americans do not speak about these events in history as required by the government, but many were left with PTSD or would never want to talk about what their country asked them to do. We are deeply humbled by the honor and sacrifice made by the AMERICANS of their generation. See more
