***ACTION ALERT 2PM DEADLINE TODAY!!!***Hi Everyone, PUSD has requested and received a grant for the GREAT Program. GREAT is an anti-gang program that would bring Police Officers into PUSD schools for community relations, and to help guide students away from gangs. Sounds good right? ...But the mere presence of police officers in schools (no matter what they are doing) is problematic. It gives them a chance to spread Pro-Police narratives to impressionable children, gives them an opportunity to "monitor" students, recruit future officers and their presence can be intimidating to children from marginalized/at-risk groups. Below is an article that explains some of the problems with having officers in schools. It isn't focussed on Community Outreach programs, but the same logic applies. "Police are gonna police" as the saying goes. Gang avoidance programs are a great idea but why not let Counselors and former gang members do this work, and have real Community input to them. As a very wise, Black organizer, who works with at-risk children put it (paraphrase): In 2020, given all that's happened, the LAST thing we want for our children is to have them see police in their classrooms. It's a particularly bad time for PUSD to implement such a program. There is a PUSD Board meeting TONIGHT so we need to reach out to PUSD and tell them we oppose the GREAT program, and any police presence in our schools. Please take a few moments to email to Superintendent Brian MacDonald: [email protected] (add topic and request to be read aloud, max 450 words and tell him why you have concerns about the GREAT program and why PUSD needs to find a better program/approach.) And make sure you cc your Board Member too.
