Three years ago today, K9 Jax lost his life in the line of duty while serving the Sunnyvale community. We will never forget Jax, we will continue to honor his service and sacrifice. But the last personality Jax had was bravery, courage, and unwavering determination...not a day has gone by where I don’t wish he was in the back of my car again...

A glimpse inside of week 5 for Joint Fire Academy (JFA) 2020-2. This week, your Sunnyvale and Santa Clara County Fire Department recruits trained on a very important topic: Firefighter Survival. Firefighter Survival training supplies recruits with a greater understanding of the need for situational awareness, fire fighter survival skills, and the technical survival skills to help avoid committing fatal errors on the fireground. Heartbreakingly, according to U.S. Fire Administration statistics so far in 2020, 72 firefighters have lost their lives in the line of duty in the United States. Thank you to our JFA 2020-2 instructors for all they do to prepare and train our future firefighters.

This #HalloweenWeekend, don’t be haunted by a DUI. It’s simple, have fun this weekend but: Don’t Drive Drunk... Don’t Drive High Don’t Drive Buzzed Designate a sober driver, use ride shares, or public transit. There is no excuse to get behind the wheel impaired. Don’t be the reason you or someone else doesn’t make it home alive. This isn’t the #Halloween costume you want to be wearing. (California Office of Traffic Safety)

Through the years, you’ve showed up strong to our annual Rides-for-Toys event to help support families in need during the holidays. This year is a lot different, but the needs of deserving families in our community remains the same. Our Rides-for-Toys event may be cancelled, but there are still ways you can help support children and families in need this holiday season. Learn how by visiting Sunnyvale Community Services at https://svcommunityservices.org/donate-holiday-center/. Please help spread the word by sharing and thank you for your generosity!

Scam Alert: Apology from electric company. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is asking that community members be made aware of a new scam going around. People are being cold-called by would-be scammers with spoofed telephone numbers, often with the same prefix as the intended victim’s own phone, and greeted by a recording saying, This is an apology from your electric company. The caller then offers a rebate due to overcharging, and if the intended victim ...stays on, a live caller joins and attempts to solicit bank information. Please note that this is a scam and there is no such active rebate program currently being offered by any major utility in California and should one ever be offered, it would likely be in the form of bill credits. The Federal Communications Commission investigates such scams and the CPUC advises that you immediately hang up on any such calls received. For a list of common and current scams visit USA.org at https://www.usa.gov/common-scams-frauds.

On August 28, 2020, California passed a law prohibiting the sale of most flavored tobacco products (SB 793) effective January 1, 2021. The new State law largely prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco products with three primary exemptions: 1. hookah and shisha products if sold by a licensed tobacco retailer and where entry is limited to those aged 21 and over; 2. premium cigars that are handmade with a tobacco leaf wrapper, with a wholesale price of no less than $12 as we...ll as premium cigars sold in a cigar lounge and consumed on the premises; and 3. loose leaf tobacco, such as for use in pipes, and which is usually sold in pouches (except for tobacco used for roll-your-own cigarettes). The new State law explicitly provides that local governments may pass stricter local ordinances. Sunnyvale has decided to proceed with providing Council with the opportunity to adopt a local ordinance to ban flavored tobacco products, including the exemptions provided under the new state law. This topic will be discussed at the next Council meeting on October 27th. Your input is sought. The agenda and report are available for viewing at http://sunnyvaleca.legistar.com/calendar.aspx Here is how you can participate: Watch the City Council meeting on television over Comcast Channel 15, at http://youtube.com/SunnyvaleMeetings or http://sunnyvaleca.legistar.com/calendar.aspx. Around the holidays, crimes like package thefts and robberies are usually on the rise, that’s why our Burglary Suppression Detail (BSD) is out in full force keeping a watchful eye over our city. They’re out looking for anyone trying to victimize our community. BSD hit the streets in full force last week and will be out through the holidays focusing primarily on burglary and robbery enforcement efforts. We got you covered Sunnyvale, but we still need you to do your part. If you see something suspicious, say something by calling us911 for emergencies and in-progress crime or 408-730-7180 for non-emergencies.

Did your kid recently have a birthday and does your kid call their grandparents Nonney and Pa? Well, Nonney and Pa sent a birthday gift in the mail, but a couple of mail thieves took it before it could get to your kid. Thanks to a concerned resident who called in a suspicious vehicle and your Sunnyvale officers, we’ve got it back. The mail thieves were also arrested, one had an outstanding felony warrant and they were both on probation. Great team work by officers and reside...nts! Well, we can’t wait to reunite this $20 with its rightful owner. If this sounds like it belongs to your kid please inbox us. Unfortunately there was no envelope, that’s why we have no address. We do know the name of the rightful owner though, you’ll just need to confirm it for us and maybe we can even have Nonney and Pa on the phone during the reunion! Work your magic social media!
