Your boat may have a hydraulic steering system. This system has 4 basic elements: helm pump, reservoir, relief valve, and cylinder. The steering wheel is mounted to the shaft of the helm pump. Turning the steering wheel pumps hydraulic fluid to the steering cylinder. Extra hydraulic fluid and pressure head maintained by the reservoir prevents air from entering the system. An air pressure gauge on the reservoir shows that the reservoir is charged to the proper pressure. To kee...p dirt from entering the system, hydraulic fluid in the reservoir passes through a filter as it flows out of the reservoir. A relief valve protects both the mechanical portion of the rudder (in case the rudder strikes a hard object) and the hydraulic system. This is a manual system, not a power steering system. The effort required to turn the wheel will increase as the system is called on to exert more force on the rudder. At no time, should anyone expect this system to turn as easily as a car's power steering. Check the level of hydraulic fluid in the reservoir regularly and replenish if necessary. The fill cap behind the wheel has a gauge indicating the fluid level. All other maintenance should be performed by your dealer. See more

Other than the common sense and good judgement of the operator, the steering system is the most important safety system on your boat. Factors requiring operator attention for safe steering include engine torque, trim tab settings, waves, and speed. Power steering provides positive steering control while providing the operator with the steering sensitivity and "feel" needed for good steering control. An enclosed cable system connects the steering wheel to the stern drive. Check the cables regularly and tighten them as needed.

TIPS FOR THE ROOKIE TIE ONE ON: Pontoon boats are so sturdy on the water that it can be hard to remember they'll drift as well as any other kind of boat. Something about the lack of rocking convinces even longtime boaters that they aren't even on the water. Forget this at your own peril- learn some basic knots and double check them to make sure you're securely tied to that floating dock or rock on the beach. Otherwise you'll find yourself watching that newly purchased prized possession float away and become subject to the elements. Don't let this happen to you.

TIPS FOR THE ROOKIE Watch for Oncoming Traffic: There are no easily visible lanes on the water, and other craft can approach your boat from all angles. Keep your head on a swivel, and instruct passengers to help you keep an eye out for those you share the water with. A quick way to develop a reputation as a careless boater is to cut someone off or rock and anchored boat.

MORE TIPS FOR THE ROOKIE!! Drain Plug? What drain plug? Most boats come with a drain hole built right into them. While this may seem like a bad idea at first glance, it's only a problem for the inexperienced or distracted boater. Many boat sinkings occur right at the dock, thanks to a forgetful captain neglecting to check if the drain plug was secure. Today, you can purchase drain plugs that actually have alarms that will sound if the engine is engaged and the plug is not secure. If you don't want to trust your memeory on somehting so vital, maybe picking one up is the way to go.

TIPS FOR THE ROOKIE!! BRAKE ON!! Everyone's heard the story about the guy whose new truck was pulled into the lake thanks to a parking brake that was left off. But just in case you haven't, it's a reality. If you aren't the one backing the trailer into the water, make sure the person responsible knows to put that brake on before even thinking of leaving the vehicle. Even if you think you can sprint to the moving SUV, open the door and gun the engine before you're too deep in, the laws of momentum take over somewhere, and it might be too late even then. Just trust us on this one: leave the brake on!!

TIPS FOR SPEED - PART 3: From time to time, we occasionally see older boats that suffer some speed loss. Check the boat bottom for excessive scratches, dings, and other damage. Propellers are another potential source of speed loss. Damage to propellers can definitely affect speed. Dings and chunks missing are obvious, but we've seen props that looked fine that the customer had run through a sandbar. One particular instance of this knocked a little of the propeller cup out, resulting in a 2 mph speed loss. Also, remember that most props are hand- finished when manufactured, so one prop may run slightly faster than another.
