With all the popularity of mixed martial arts and grappling, people seem to forget that in a self defense situation, there is usually more than one attacker. In situations where there is just one attacker, that person usually has a friend or friends watching. In those situations, the LAST thing you want to do is STAY on the ground. There's a difference between sparring in mixed martial arts, kickboxing, boxing and other martial arts vs. self defense. In sparring matches - or even a confrontation out in public - most of the time you KNOW it's coming. You see and detect the threat (or agree to the sparring match) and you can be PROACTIVE.
