Zlaket's Market 09.11.2020

It's only been a couple of weeks since we closed the doors of our old building, and we already miss you all so much! However, as one door closes, another opens. As we locked the doors to our old "brick and mortar", we are embracing the future through social media. Over the past 2 1/2 weeks, we've been preparing for the holidays while both Leo and David's garages look like something out of "Sanford & Son"... we've collected a lot of "junk" over the past 87 years... some of it... "picker's gold". Leo was even able to attend a mid-week matinee performance of Roman's school play "The Grinch"! As we woke up on this chilly Sunday morning, the family was in the mood for some waffles. I broke out Grandma Kay's Pancake & Waffle Recipe. It's so simple. I can honestly say, Bisquick has never been served in our home! I always preferred Grandma's pancakes, but these days, my family prefers the waffles... I'm out-voted. Roman & Gabi are more Log Cabin fans, but Tina, David & Virginia have always loved Stonewall Kitchen's syrups... especially Blueberry! Enjoy! Grandma Kay's Best Pancakes! In a large bowl, beat together: 1cup Milk 1 egg 2- tablespoons cooking oil Sift together: 1 cup all purpose flower 2- tablespoons baking powder 2- tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt Add dry to liquid, blend with whisk, add more milk as needed. Fry on lightly oiled griddle. I like to sift the dry ingredients on a paper towel, then dump it in with the liquid... Sometimes, when you're doing pancakes, the first batch doesn't come out as well. As our light burns bright for one more day, we'd like to again thank all those who have come into our store and come into our lives for so many years. Thank you to all our customers who have allowed us to be part of their special moments... birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, even funerals. Thank you for letting us be part of your daily routine... like talking about the high school football game over a pastrami sandwich. Thank you to all our employees over the years, who all ...brought their own unique qualities to help our store thrive. Everyone of you were like family to us, and we thank you for exemplifying our tradition of quality and service. We would not have survived for so long without the love and support from the community of Garden Grove. Most importantly, we'd like to thank God for blessing us with the foundation of our family through the guidance of Leo & Mary Zlaket. Again, our famous neon sign is burning for one more day, but our spirit and legacy will never burn out. Please continue to follow us on Facebook, where we will continue to post recipes, answer food questions and stay in touch with all of you. We love you, and we'll miss you all! Leo, Virginia, David, Tina, Gabi & Roman See more

When the time came, and I had to write a eulogy for my grandma, I put it off and put it off... thinking it was going to be the most difficult task... turns out, it was easy. Talking about someone you love, recounting a lifetime of stories was a "piece of cake" and joyful. So I've been putting off making the following announcement, because I thought it would be like writing a eulogy... After 87 years, Zlaket's Market will be closing at the end of the month. The timing is kind...a fitting... November 26th will be the last day, and this will be our last Thanksgiving. The holiday season has always been so special for our family and our market... so many great memories and so many people to thank who have made it special! As many know, I have been working and serving up "Zlaket Specials" at Orange Lutheran High School for the past few months, and Leo and Virginia are anxious to truly enjoy the fruits of years of labor. The news and rumors have been spreading, and so many people have stopped by to tell us how sad they are..."Why?" we would say, "We're happy!" Maybe it hasn't sunk in yet, but as we reflect, there's only been good memories... memories of all the people who have made this little market such a treasure. We thank all those who have ever worked at the market... of course all Zlakets and Batistas and all the employees who have been like family... Gene Hinchburger, Mrs. Edmonds, Shirley, Susan, Sharon, Mike Minutoli, Deb, Denise, and Lisa, Victor, Vito Tennenini, all the Ryans, Francisco, Pressy, Aida, Mark Temple, Tom Doolin, Josh... and so many others... all those whose first job was at our market. People have been coming in saying how much they'll miss us... the truth is, we'll miss you all more. Thank you to all our loyal customers, and all those who have only been in once... thank you for sharing in the experience. Roman was sad when he heard the news... his name is on this building, and this is his first job too! I told him, I don't know what the future holds... I'm keeping the clock, I'm keeping the sign, and if he ever wants to start another Zlaket's Market some day, we can! Maybe this isn't a closing... maybe we're just taking a break! That being said, please come by to share in our joy, pick up your holiday fixin's (Order Your Diestel Turkey!), grab one last Root Beer Float! Thank you everyone... we love you! The Zlakets See more

When Grandma Kay was alive, she did all the baking for the store. She would literally make like 3 cakes a day chocolate, lemon, red velvet, apple cinnamon cake... whatever she felt like! She lived right down the street, so in my morning routine, I would stop by and pick them up. In addition to all the cakes, she would usually have some cookies or a pie for us to eat at the store or take home. She would always have a bacon sandwich waiting for me... sometimes between two waffles. (years later, I guess that explains the belly!) There's so much I miss about her, but I'm lucky that I can still come to the store and have my dad make me a bacon sandwich... I know what you're thinkin' from looking at the picture... "Where's the Waffles?!!
