One of the most important tasks for anyone wanting to regularly meditate is to create a personal practice environment. This includes place and time and will inevitably take some experimentation. Where, at home or work, can I sit relatively undisturbed? What time of the day is my schedule clear when I’m most likely to keep the meditation commitment I’ve made to myself?... Is there a local meditation community where I can take my place in order to receive support, teaching and encouragement? Part of this exercise is to find the right cushion for me, whether sitting in a chair, kneeling, or using one of the cross-legged postures. Its for this reason that cushions come in three sizes and two kinds of stuffing. Its unlikely that a person will settle on the best cushion right away because the first weeks and months of practice are spent experimenting with postures and, if sitting regularly, one becomes more flexible requiring less lift (height of the cushion). Over time, our meditation place, or Dharma Seat, becomes our own and we become very fond of it as it is our personal place of refuge, healing and discovery.
