Inspired to pursue social work in high school, John McCall has been serving the community of San Gabriel Valley for more than 41 years. Working at a state hospital in child welfare as a graduate student, Mr. McCall witnessed how many interventions would punish both parents and their children for social problems outside of their control: For people who are marginalized and poor, the system can punish you more for being marginalized and poor... I met a mother who had to leave ...her child to take a bus two hours to look for work... we shouldn’t punish that parent, we should offer her services. In 1993, with this perspective, Mr. McCall founded D'Veal Family & Youth Services, a community-based non-profit agency providing comprehensive outpatient mental health services to children and families, focusing specifically on culturally competent mental health services. Mr. McCall is also the senior pastor of The Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Pasadena. Pastor McCall is working to fulfill the mission of the Bethel Church through actively engaging in ongoing church planning intended to meet the unique needs of the community. Pastor McCall derives inspiration from his faith and from his ancestors: When we as communities of color listen to stories from our elders, it reminds me that I’m blessed to be able and allowed to serve. I believe service is a gift. #racialjusticewarrior #socialwork #serveothers #YWCAisonamission #YWCASGV

We are excited to share that LA County Board of Supervisors is all-female for the first time since the Board’s inception in 1852! This is history or, better yet, herstory, said Chair of the Board Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor for the First District. We’ve shattered a glass ceiling right here in Los Angeles County. For girls and women everywhere, this demonstrates that no dream is too big. The white ensemble worn by the Board is also a tribute to another historical moment t...his year the 100th anniversary of the formal adoption of the 19th Amendment into the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. #YWCASGVisonamission #empoweringwomen See more

Re-post @danielledorky Rather than celebrate the mistold legacy of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, cities across America are swapping Columbus Day for Indigenous Peoples’ Day and using the holiday as a way to learn about Indigenous American histories. This is the third year that Los Angeles is observing the holiday after a measure was passed in 2017. . Prior to the arrival of Spanish in the late 18th century, LA County was home to three Indigenous American tribe...s: the Tongva, Tataviam, and Chumash, who were renamed the Gabrieleño, Fernandeño, and Ventureño respectively by Spanish settlers. At the time of colonization, an estimated 350,000 Indigenous people belonging to over 200 tribes lived across the state. Within 100 years, that number dropped to just 30,000 Indigenous people as many died from disease, violence, poverty, assimilation, and other factors. . California’s Indigenous tribes and communities have persevered in spite of those tragedies and today the state boasts more residents with Indigenous heritage than any other state in America. With the inclusion of Pacific Islander and Latin American Indigenous Diasporas, LA calls itself home to the largest Indigenous population of any city in the United States. . In honor of Indigenous People Day, we must take the time to acknowledge the abuse that occurs within indigenous communities and the barriers they face to obtain adequate resources. In the work to end violence against indigenous women, we have to stand in solidarity with victims of domestic violence and elevate indigenous voices. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #DomesticViolenceAwareness #YWCAIsOnAMission #solidarity #protectindigenouspeople
