Dear Ringe Pool/Park and Recreation & Park District Supporters: We wanted to give you an update on the "latest" happenings with the pool grant and the recreation and parks district proposals. Here's what's going on: Pool Grant:... As was mentioned in the last email, we unfortunately did not receive the state Prop 68 grant for Ringe Pool and Park. A group of us were able to receive some feedback from our Siskiyou County project officer at the CA Department of Recreation and Parks. And, it was both good and not-so-good in terms of his comments. He could only talk generally about strengths and weaknesses, not giving us exact scoring (although we tried hard to get a bit more information). Here is the background and his comments: Criteria for Selection: The pool grant had nine (9) criteria for selection. The first three criteria were worth 41 points out of the 100 points available and dealt with 1) park space, 2) poverty level and 3) type of project. This is where we were weak. Unfortunately, these criteria are ones that are dependent on the location and type of project we proposed, and beyond our control at Ringe. An explanation of each of these three criteria and the maximum points available is as follows: 1. Critical Lack of Park Space - (max 15 points) - For the 1/2 mile radius around Ringe Park, there are 13 acres of park space for a ratio of about 6 acres per 1000 residents. This is very high. We are not sure, but other projects probably had close to a zero (0) park acre ratio in the areas they proposed, so they would get close to maximum points. 2. Significant Poverty - (max 16 points) - Although we are a poor community, the 1/2 mile radius around Ringe had a median income of $43,821. If you look at other areas in the City, the median income is almost half that much. 3. Type of Project - (max 10 points ) - Because our project is a "renovation" and not a "new" park, we lost three points. (We did know that going in.) For all of the other criteria, community based planning, needs assessment, etc., he reported that we were very strong and did not cite any weaknesses. So, thanks to all of you for providing input - it made for a strong application where we were able to make the case. Our next meeting will be Monday March 16, 6:00 pm at the YMCA

A group of community volunteers wants to improve our recreational activities in the Yreka area. We’ve had a few meetings to discuss how to do this and are proposing the creation of a Yreka Recreation and Parks District. The District would assist the many activities currently going on in the community, e.g. sports, trails, gardens, parks and pool*. And, it will benefit everyone ages 2 to 92! Yreka area community members have been so supportive of our recreational efforts... in the past and it is appreciated by all of us. At the January 29th Community Roundtable meeting, we will provide more background information and will also conduct small group discussions where you can share your opinions. We hope you can attend! *The City of Yreka has applied for a grant to rebuild Ringe Pool. The proposed district would operate the pool facility. COMMUNITY ROUNDTABLE Discussion of a Potential Yreka Recreation & Parks District! Wednesday, January 29, 2020 6:00pm to 7:30pm
