Common Name: Common Yarrow Scientific Name: Achillea millefolium Yurok Name: Mechaanep' Common Yarrow is known by many names throughout it's range, which includes North America and Eurasia. For thousands of years, people have used it for food, medicine, and as a precursor to hops in brewing traditions. Yarrow also has a role in the European witchcraft and Chinese I Ching divination. The genus Achillea got its name from the legend of Achilles, who is said to have brought yarro...w to battle with him as a treatment for wounds. Many of the common names for yarrow in the Western tradition stem from its ability to stop or start bleeding. Here are a few of the dozens of folkloric names given to the plant: Photos: Brett Whaley, Jim Morefield on Flickr Sources: Wikipedia - Common Yarrow

Haven't you heard?...We have podcasts! Two of which are our very own :) Humboldt Holding Up is a weekly chat with a local about their local thing. HHU is produced by Lost Coast Outpost's Stephanie McGeary and Andrew Goff. It's very interesting and always fun. Find the latest episode at lostcoastoutpost.com/podcasts/ The Humboldt Chronicles is a monthly, a very sophisticated, chat about all things weed. You can catch the THC live on the 1st Wednesday of the month on 94.1 - Th...e Lounge & KHUM, Radio Without The Rules at 6pm, or re-aired on the following Sunday on KWPT The Point at 10am & KSLG at 11am. You can always find it archived at lostcoastoutpost.com/podcasts or 941lounge.com. The EcoNews Report is the Northcoast Environmental Center's weekly roundtable tackling tough environmental issues here on the North Coast. Cath it on Saturday mornings on KHUM, Radio Without The Rules at 10am. Or listen at your convivence at lostcoastoutpost.com/podcasts/
