Please be aware of these signs. Spread the word to help those who are in an abusive relationship, but may not see it.

This is Walter Wallace, Jr. He was a father, husband and aspiring rapper. And on October 26th, he was shot and killed by Philadelphia Police while having a mental health crisis. He had a diagnosis and was taking medication but unfortunately the police felt that shooting him multiple times was the appropriate response to him wielding a knife. No other measures were attempted first. If you don’t understand the Defund the Police movement, he would be the face of it, along with Elijah McClain and so many others. Black people having mental health crisis are fatally wounded, while others are taken into custody. Police should NOT be responding to mental health calls PERIOD. This is more than a need for cultural competence training. This is a need to have the appropriate experts responding to mental health situations.

October 10th is World Mental Health Day. We all know this year has been a tough one, particularly for people living with mental illness and their carers. So that’s why, this World Mental Health Day, we are focusing on how to overcome the challenges of lockdown and how, together, we can push for a better world, post-pandemic. What are some things you can do?... 1) Track gratitude and achievement with a journal. Include 3 things you were grateful for and 3 things you were able to accomplish each day. 2) Work your strengths. Do something you’re good at to build self-confidence, then tackle a tougher task. 3) Show some love to someone in your life. Close, quality, relationships are key for a happy, healthy life. 4) Experiment with a new recipe, write a poem, paint or try a Pinterest project. Creative expression and overall well-being are linked. #WorldMentalHealthDay #YourBeautifulMind #mentalhealthawareness

You are not your diagnosis! You are not the inferior image that society has tried to paint of you. You matter and so does your mental health. #BlackMentalHealthMatters #YouAreNotAlone #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Bebe Moore Campbell is why we commemorate Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in July. Her tireless effort to highlight how the stigmas of racism and mental illness devastate the black community brought the taboo issue to the forefront. We celebrate her legacy. #BlackMentalHealthMatters #YouAreNotAlone #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Historical dehumanization, oppression, and violence against Black people has evolved into present day racism - structural, institutional, and individual and cultivates a uniquely mistrustful experience. Processing and dealing with layers of individual trauma on top of new mass traumas from COVID-19, and divisive political rhetoric adds compounding layers of complexity for individuals to responsibly manage. #BlackMentalHealthMatters #YouAreNotAlone #MinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth
