We switched our on-line platform at Yoga Soup. It’s a big deal in our small world. I’ve remained in the background as my tech skills mostly stop with making oa...tmeal. This morning I reach through habit for the old app and realize it’s not there. Suddenly I don’t know what to do. i don’t know how to get to where I need to be in spite of being told what to do. Inspite of being told how easy it is. I’m lost in the un-familiar. Angry. Confused. Scared. I can’t help but think that my unease will be experienced by many students used to checking their old apps. Why am I further complicating their lives, especially these days. I remember asking the new people about their new app, and being told one doesn’t exist. I’m berating myself for not paying more attention to this process and asking more questions. now that the barn door’s open I wonder if we’ve adequately, responsibly, lovingly prepared our students for this transition? Was this necessary? Everything about this transition, in this moment, feels rushed. I want to go back to the old way. I accept this might just be me, in my discomfort of the unfamiliar. Other people certainly don’t feel like this. They love the new way. Can’t wait for the next breakthrough. Yoga Soup is old school not for anything in particular that it does, but for its capacity to host kindly, and not force or compel people into unnecessary, unimportant positions just for the sake of illusory progress. We’re committed to not improving ourselves into a state of mental exhaustion and collapse. I’m wondering if we’ve violated our mandate. Why folks practice with us has zero to do with technological advancement yet, with grim irony, i realize that without technology, no one can practice with us at the moment. How to dance on the head of this pin?

It’s CELEBRATE THE BODY YOU’RE IN DAY swipe for Eddie thoughts Read the full blog post in our link in bio ... . . . . . #yogasoup #pleasebreathe #celebratethebodyyourein #yourbeautifulbody

Yoga Soup 19.11.2020

To pass some time ... let's consider the body, yours and mine, the same way we once considered food. Before there was inorganic food everything grown was organi...c. Similarly, before we started working" on our bodies, there was a natural body that we simply lived in. Just as it occurred to someone to infuse crops with chemicals to make them bigger and pest resistant, it occurred to someone to alter their natural body in order to make some parts of it bigger and other parts smaller. These "bigger" and "smaller" parts were then infused with meaning to create value. You may have to go pretty far back in your memory to remember the natural body you inhabited before you started believing in having a good or a bad body, but that inner knowing remains, buried under an avalanche of habits, beliefs and repetitive affirmations, some positive, most negative. There exists a body that’s always just being itself, okay with reality. It was there during your first diet. It was there when you felt a flush of pride in it being noticed, or shame when other bodies were noticed instead of yours. It was there when you took measures to stay being noticed, or chose to hide out of self-loathing. Though the natural body is there every time we look in the mirror what we usually see is a body of ideas and values, none of which have ever been true. *********** The true body is always there, just like fruits growing naturally off of trees have always been there. It’s the body that’s unlabeled and unfettered and unadorned. It's priceless because it exists beyond artificial value. It’s the body that’s free and independent. A body in which the thought of its improvement or belief in its lack never arises. You are that body. Today, by coincidence, is Celebrate the Body You're In Day! In fact, every day is Celebrate the Body You're In Day. Those other bodies the mind creates -- lets call them anti-bodies -- are the imaginary bodies overlaid on top of the one true body that has no shape yet contains all shapes. ************************************ a personal note . In the back of the comic books I devoured as a kid there was always an ad for the Charles Atlas body-building system. It showed a skinny young man being mocked by a he-man who punches him and takes away his girl. The skinny man slinks away, discovers the Charles Atlas man & muscle-building system, works at it, then returns triumphantly to avenge his humiliation and win back the female prize that historically goes to the strongest male beast in the jungle. ****** I’m very young. I don’t know I have a body. I don’t know I’m skinny. I don’t know I have curly hair. While I see differences among bodies, I don't know what they mean. ************* I save my newspaper route money and order an isometric contraption called a bullworker. I put the chart of exercises on my wall and do them every day. When I look in the mirror I see, or believe I see, incremental changes to my physique. I believe these changes create a better version of me. I begin not to feel right when Im not adding to my body. Also, though some days the changes make me feel good, the feeling is short-lived because invariably I meet other people who inhabit bodies far better then my own. I spend the first 30 years of my precious human life constructing a body I hope others find attractive while at the same time, unbeknownst to me, protects me against a world I believe is out to hurt and ridicule me. I spend the next 30 years deconstructing the body I spent the first 30 constructing. The $2.75 question: how do I want to spend the next 30 years?

Ordinarily, we'd squeeze 90+ people body-to-body for our annual Thanksgiving Day class. Everyone was fine with the lack of space. It was great good fun to cozy up and all the proceeds went to Transition House, an organization making a real difference in peoples’ lives. Ok, Plan B.... Suzanne Marlow and I taught this morning on Zoom to celebrate yoga in its infinite varieties of healing movement and prayer and the delight of being quiet, together. The woman pictured is our friend Suzanne, who was an almost daily visitor to Yoga Soup for many years. She'd read the Bible and journal her thoughts. All her possessions were in a cart parked outside the studio. She always seemed content and happy. I haven't seen her at all this year. I hope she's well. The other woman was our friend Margaret, who'd visit every Wednesday for soup and to browse our books. She passed away this year. We miss her. Also absent these past nine months are the usual group of dedicated students pouring out refreshed, relaxed and invigorated from their classes. Many have toned and sculptured bodies and many of those bodies have fractured and frightened hearts beating inside them. However we look, whatever we have ... life will teach us it’s not who we are. Bless our dedicated teachers devoted to their craft and to their students' well being. Bless our staff organized as much around kindness as they are competency. It helps that we’ve been a reliable place in town offering a couch, a class, a carrot, a cup of soup and a good read about the false thoughts that can run through our heads and ruin lives. A place where we could unlearn what's not real and remember what is. That’s really all Yoga Soup is. ***continued in the comments*** See more

A place where we could unlearn what's not real and remember what is. That’s really all Yoga Soup is. We are one small place, on a very small side street, in a relatively small city open every day of the year for 15 years .... at least we were. Our job is to well tend the space for inquiry, growth and self-study through a wide variety of offerings. We have things for you to buy but we’ll never try to sell you anything, especially ideas about existence. Should it be time to fold tent and find a different way to serve so be it but we’re working hard for a different outcome. Yoga Soup’s role as a small but crucial piece of the biodiversity and emotional health of Santa Barbara is worth preserving. We’re blessed to be one of many such community spaces to offer respite from the ordinary madness of modern life. Though we haven’t had classes since March, our doors remained open, just as they had during the recession and the fires. Anyone who wants, and who wears a mask, can visit, sit, read and ponder life’s imponderables. ******** To remain open we'll need help. If you’ve been to Yoga Soup, had a favorable impression, a good class, a sweet potato, bowl of oatmeal, a good read .... perhaps you’d consider making a small donation. A little bit from the many will go a long way in keeping the studio open. ******* https://www.yogasoup.com/donations/ ******** For the support over the many years, thank you. May whatever God you honor bless you and your loved ones this holiday season with good health, renewed vigor and the wisdom to know what’s real. much love, Eddie
