Client wanted natural wood--in this case beautiful walnut--with updated black handles. The old cheap doors and drawers, repaired numerous times with mdf and poor methods, are in pretty bad shape. The handles (single screw) couldn't be tightened and the few that had been, crushed the interior of the cabinet doors which is actually filled with cardboard. The paint had no chance of being clean, ever. Later, other aspects to be done, but for now, just custom drawers and cabinet doors, made out of real wood.

So these old drawers didn't have soft close glides. I decided to go ahead and install them after refinishing the drawer face with walnut wood and poly clear coat. I have a video about the process (posted on this site) but in this pic I am making sure the drawer is level while attach the drawer side glide to the actual drawer--this is actually a really easy way to do it--after you install the gliding frame to the cabinet box.

Installing soft close drawer glides/slides on old drawers with no glides whatsoever. $20 per pair at Home Depot. Challenges were how to attach glides when face frames had deep recesses behind them. Normally you would just get an extender(s) for back of glide to attach to wall but these walls are about 6-8" behind drawers! Extenders don't usually come that long or if they do, they're expensive (times the number of drawers you have to do). This made it necessary to add framing... pieces to interior cabinet box (of which one side was bowed inwards towards drawer considerably. These are the kinds of challenges you run into in the real world after watching a youtube video where it gets done quickly and without issues. I had to resand drawer face down after taking drawer apart and rebuilding for propersize for glide. Still have to remove handle and reapply a coat of poly to clean up the look. The soft close is not necessary but it's so cool. See more
