To celebrate and commemorate Black History Month, WRC would like to take this moment to highlight the great work and efforts being done by Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement. In 2006, Tarana Burke began using the hashtag #MeToo online in order to create a safe environment that would allow for survivors of sexual abuse and sexual assault such as herself to speak on their experiences without shame. The hashtag and the movement of #MeToo gained immense traction in 201...7, during the reckoning of sexual abuse and violence perpetrated by prominent figures in the Hollywood industry as well as throughout the world. The inundation of viral online stories of many survivors emphasized the deep pervasiveness of sexual violence and rape culture in our society. Tarana Burke continues with her mission to help survivors understand their trauma by empowering and centering their voices throughout their journey of healing and reclaiming their power. We applaud her efforts and join her on our collective mission to end sexual violence and empower survivors.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Join WRC this month by supporting us in spreading awareness about the prevalence of dating violence amongst our teens. All people independent of race, creed, gender, and sexuality deserve and have the right to be safe in their relationships especially our youth who are oftentimes extremely susceptible and vulnerable to dating violence. According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention, approximately 4,105 teens are victims ...of dating violence on a daily basis. The exposure to unhealthy, abusive, and/or violent relationships can cause a multitude of harmful short-term and long-term effects to these young folks such as mental and emotional issues, engaging in unhealthy behaviors, future victimization or even perpetuation of violence. It is imperative that teens are presented with the realities of dating in terms of what a healthy relationship looks like, along with the red flags that are present in unhealthy relationships through education via educators, peers and most importantly their parents. The influence and engagement from trusted adults in the lives of our youth have shown tremendous results. When a protective and safe environment is created to engage in important conversations about dating this has helped reduce and stop teen dating violence. Learn how you can do your part in preventing teen dating violence and supporting survivors of dating violence by clicking on the link in our bio.

National Wear Red Day is a day in February when many people wear red to show their support for the awareness of heart disease. It’s no longer just about wearing red; it’s no longer just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about all women making a commitment to stand together with Go Red and taking charge of their own heart health as well as the health of those they can’t bear to live without. #hearthealth #health #heartdisease #healthcare

Ida B. Wells was a prominent journalist, activist, and researcher, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In her lifetime, she battled sexism, racism, and violence. As a skilled writer, Wells also used her skills as a journalist to shed light on the conditions of African Americans throughout the South. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Over the course of a lifetime dedicated to combating prejudice and violence, and the fight for African-American equality, especially that of women, Wells arguably became the most famous Black woman in America. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #violence #sexism #racism

Today, November 20th, we remember and commemorate the lives of transgender folxs that have been lost as well as continue to champion transgender and gender-diverse communities. Transgender Day of Remembrance began as a vigil in 1999 that was organized by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to commerate the death of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman and has since been commerated to highlight the loss of lives due to transphobia. According to the Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) research pr...oject, 350 trans and gender-diverse people were murdered, 6% more than in the TMM update 2019. 98% of those murdered globally were trans women or trans feminine people. It is important to highlight that the data presented does not include unreported cases due to lack of data collection as well as the misgendering of victims globally.
