Morning Devotion with Pastor Glenn -10/29/2020 Keep Watch Mark 14:38 - Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. As we continue to look into the command of Jesus to watch and pray, the first important thing we have learned was that our life in this world is a journey with Him. We should not allow the temporal things in this world to obscure our spiritual journey with Jesus. The second important thing that Jesus ...is teaching us today from our text is that to KEEP WATCH is to RECOGNIZE the WEAKNESS of the FLESH. Anticipating the cross under God's wrath is unimaginable to us much more so to our Lord Jesus Christ. And His loneliness must have been intensified by the failure of His disciples to stand with Him in the hour of greatest need. Knowing the anguish Jesus was going through, Peter, James and John, should have stayed up and watched for Jesus return from His prayer time. And they should have been ready to offer consolation. But despite having heard what lay ahead from Jesus Himself, the disciples did not understand their own weakness. They did not grasp the need to rely on The Lord and not in their own strength for the trial ahead. The disciples were willing to stay with Jesus, but they did not take into account the power of their weakness of the flesh to overpower their commitment to Christ. Matthew Henry commented, The consideration of the weakness and infirmity of our flesh should engage and quicken us to prayer and watchfulness" Like the disciples, it is easy for us to overestimate our own strength. We assume that we will be ready to stand for Christ in the day of trial, believing that even if everyone were to fall away, we would remain committed to Christ. Too often, we assume that we are more stronger than others. But when we become confident that we will stand because we believe we have some kind of inherent strength, then we are trusting in the shakiest of foundations. The disciples learned their lessons on the night our Savior was betrayed. When the moment of truth came, not even Peter was bold enough to stay with Jesus. And at the hour of Jesus arrest, all the disciples fled. And seriously, this story reveals not only the truth about God but about ourselves. We dare not think that it would be impossible for us to show similar cowardice and faithlessness. The temptation to flee our Christian profession is strong when there is a real cost to our obedience, and if we trust ourselves we will fail. See more

Morning Devotion with Pastor Glenn -10/26/2020 Keep Watch Mark 13:35-37 - "Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back - whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' Many of us probably consider the statement of Jesus above as a warning. But actually it's a command. He commands us to be watchfu...l at all times. The word watch is "gregoreo", meaning to actively give strict attention, vigilant, on something that might overtake you. Therefore if we fail to be watchful, we will not only incur undesirable consequences but simply is to disobey God. As Jesus went to a place Gethsemane with His disciples to pray, He commanded His disciples to keep watch. But His disciples disobeyed and found them sleeping. And what was the consequences of the disciples disobedience for not being watchful? Not only did Peter denied his Lord three times, but all the disciples "deserted Him and fled" (Mark 14:50). Not one of them stood by their commitment to follow Jesus all the way to Calvary. As we carefully look into the narrative of Mark on Jesus journey towards the cross with the disciples this week, there are important things to keep in mind that would help us not to loose sight of our mission. The first important thing we will consider today is that to keep watch or being watchful is to UNDERSTAND the PURPOSE of our JOURNEY. The disciples perspective was completely blurred by their wrong expectation of the work Jesus Christ. The change that consumes their heart was political, social and economic change. The prospect of overturning the Roman control over the nation Israel was undeniably at hand in the light of Jesus powerful miracles. The disciples were jockeying for position as transition of power looms in the horizon. But they got it all wrong. Jesus came not to establish earthly kingdom, but a spiritual kingdom. Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is from another place". (John 18:37; 1Peter1:1;Phil. 3:20). As much as we press the importance of political, social, and economic issues of our day as we fulfill our civil duty to cast our vote in the coming days on November 3, that will decide the temporal future of our nation, but we must keep the perspective that we are not fighting ultimately for political, social and economic victory, but for spiritual victory. We are looking forward to that day when The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and He will reign for ever and ever. (Rev.11:15).
