The West LA STEM program presented a special guest presentation by Dr. Bonnie Ellen Blustein on Becoming Scientists: Following Footsteps, Blazing Trails. Dr. Blustein is Professor of Mathematics at West LA College and author of several books. Her presentation included recognizing important individuals that have blazed trails in science through academic achievement amidst social and economic inequality. It is easy to be enraptured by celebrities that are pushed to the foreg...round of social media. The ones that remain in the shadows should not be forgotten, but celebrated just the same. They are the true celebrities. -Edward Bouchet 1852 First black man to get a Ph.D. (Physics) -Stephanie Kwolek (1923-2014) BS Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. SHE invented Kevlar in 1964, the material famously used in bullet-proof vests. -Albert Vinicio Baez (1912-2007) Ph.D. (Physics): Helped developed the X-ray microscope and X-ray telescope. -Vivienne Malone Mayes (1932-1995) One of the first handful of African-American women to receive a Ph.D. (Mathematics) -Maryam Mirzakhani (Iran), the first woman recipient of the Fields Medal, and Artur Avila, the first Fields Medal recipient from Latin America.
