The name of the game the past few weeks has become protests and general unrest. First in Hong Kong and now wide spread throughout the US. The first thing Wall Street does when something like this happens is to look at history to see what it has done during previous similar instances. This will bring us back to several painful periods in the US history including President JFK’s assassination, the 1965 civil rights march in Selma, Ala., the Vietnam War protests in Washington, D....C., the 1968 assassination of Dr. King and the 1992 L.A. riots which broke out after the beating of Rodney King. So what has the market historically done, it typically looks past most civil unrest. Stocks aren’t significantly more volatile in the months following any of the events listed. Today the market was flat and uncertain, but did not perceptively react negatively. Despite the uncertainty in the US right now between the COVID-19 pandemic and now the protests and riots, the markets appear to be determined to keep chugging along. Any indication that this will change should be respected. However any short term stress on the market in this form doesn’t appear to want to derail it.
