TEEN SUICIDE Why does this matter ? Suicide is a serious public health problem among all age groups. Among youth it exacts an enormous toll due to the significant years of potential life lost. In 2017, there were more than 6,200 suicide deaths among adolescents and young adults ages 15-24, making it the second-leading cause of death for that age group.... These times are hard for everyone, especially our kids! They have lost all their normalcy within their every day lives along with the rest of us. They are missing out on sports, school trips, dances, school functions and the basic daily interaction with their peers that they were so used to. Some of these kids are missing out on big moments in their young lives like SENIOR YEAR and it can begin to take a huge toll on them as well! Check on your children! Check in with them no matter their age or grade. See how they are doing. See how this crazy pandemic and all the changes that has come along with it has truly affected them, whether it’s mental, emotional or physical. Open up that line of discussion with them even if it may be uncomfortable, we need to let them know it’s okay to talk about it and that it’s okay not to be okay! If you or them need an outlet or just someone to talk to during this trying time, please do not hesitate to reach out even if it’s just to talk. Call or text your local Peer to Peer Support Provider at the number listed below! (530) 310 9266 Statistics above pulled from - https://www.americashealthrankings.org//teen_sui/state/ALL

Yesterday, our Westwood Club Live group started their first Sticker Shock Campaign. Club Live is a group of youths focused on living a life of abstinence from alcohol, drugs and tobacco. They meet here at the One Stop twice a week! The Sticker Shock Campaign is a youth-driven project that seeks to inform, educate and remind our community of the implications of selling and providing alcohol to underage youth. Prevention Education staff create a message, which is then printed onto stickers, and placed on products in liquor stores. The messaging is geared towards adults to stop them from purchasing alcohol for minors. We would like to thank our first show to participate in this important event! The Westwood Quick Mart! Thank you guys so much for helping us to spread a positive message!

We need your input! Hello Community of Westwood! Each year the Westwood Family Resource Center hosts a 16 week group course called Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin-By World. This course is designed for those in poverty to help individuals start on a better life path. The hardships of this year have definitely made it difficult to plan this course. Each participant receives $25 for each session attended to help offset costs for spending this time with us each week. We also provi...de a meal each session as well. My questions are these: If you are interested, what would stop you from attending? Would you be willing to wear masks? Would you be willing get tested for covid? Are online meetings such as zoom an option (sessions can go as long as four hours) Would you be willing to have longer sessions to to bring the course to 8 -12 weeks instead? Please comment with your own questions as well.

These elves at the one stop spent the day hard at work wrapping a present for each student currently attending Westwood Unified schools. We'd like to say thank you to the volunteers that spent hours helping us wrap. We'd also like to send a special thanks to Dollar General, Westwood Jr/Sr High School and Fletcher Walker Elementary School, and Chimney Fund for all the hard work in getting this all together. Thank you!
