"Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Dear fellow Westmonters, Yesterday's events in our nation's Capitol have left us all deeply troubled and perplexed. Violent actions are wrong and should not be condoned. We're an academic and Christian community committed to core values that undergird our mission and every aspect of our work. Our guiding documents speak to truth-centered attitudes and other-centered practices. These values take on a variety of expressions that include dialogue, peaceful, non-violent interacti...on, giving each other the benefit of the doubt, and allowing a diversity of opinions to be expressed provided they are done so in ways consistent with our core, guiding values as an institution of Christian higher education. Please know of our deep commitment as a college community to every person's welfare and to providing a context which makes our unique and essential educational mission possible. Blessings, Dr. Gayle D. Beebe President

Eternal God, amid all the turmoil and changes of the world, your love is steadfast and your strength never fails. In this time of danger and trouble, be to us a sure guardian and rock of defense. Guide the leaders of our nation with your wisdom, comfort those in distress, and grant us courage and hope to face the future; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Next up on our 2020-21 Rosebud Program roster is Malia Yim. Find out more about her film insights in our Rosebud Questionnaire below. I am a second year at Wes...tmont college, although I am currently undeclared I hope to major in Communications or Political Science with an interest in film. I am most excited to learn more from my peers and mentors at the Rosebud program about the diverse world of films and filmmaking. Everyone brings their own story when watching a film, and I am excited to gain new insights that I may have not experienced or known before. I am also thrilled to learn from directors and other creatives who share pieces of their souls with us. 1. What is the first film you remember seeing? I remember clearly watching the Disney classic "Cinderella" over and over as a child. 2. What is the last film you saw? Although I would love to share that I watched an intricate groundbreaking film, I have to admit the last film I saw was the teenage classic "Easy A" directed by Will Gluck staring Emma Stone. 3. Which film has had the biggest impact on you and why? The films that have the biggest impact on me are truthfully films that began including strong female heroines into the narrative or main focal point. From films such as "Harry Potter" who created Hermione Granger to recent film "Knives Out" with Marta Cabrera. These films captured my attention because finally I saw someone like me could be written into the narrative on the big screen. Naturally I began to watch more carefully, and it inspired me to create stories of my own. 4. Which film or films could you watch over and over? I could most likely find joy in watching "The Princess Bride" and "Mary Poppins" a hundred times and be totally content. 5. Which films and directors inspire you? The two most influential directors for me have been Greta Gerwig and Rian Johnson. Both are more recent directorial standouts in the film industry, however Gerwig drew me in with her quick-witted writing (and focus on female heroines), while Johnson has been such an encouraging director to follow as he’s from my hometown. 6. If you could have been a fly on the wall during the making of any film in history, which film would you choose? One hundred percent "Star Wars." No doubt in my mind. If I were to appear anywhere in that franchise, I would lose my marbles. 7. What is one of your favorite cinematic sequences? The introduction to "Baby Driver" is what first popped into mind. The timing, energy, colors, and scripted humor are many reasons why this sequence is such a fantastic hook for the film. 8. Why do you love cinema? Films drive my imagination to new heights. As I mentioned in my application to the program, I am a sucker for a good story, and films explore such beautiful elements of that story on camera, through music, and with words. 9. What is your dream job? Although my mind often runs wild when it comes to opportunities I hope to pursue producing, writing, and directing. 10. What excites you most about joining SBIFF’s Rosebud Program? I am most excited to simply learn. The Rosebud Program is a great opportunity for me to grow my knowledge on film outside an academic setting and learn from peers and mentors who are in the business of filming, the creatives. Learning, in my opinion, is one of the greatest ways to expand creativity.

Next up on our 2020-21 Rosebud Program roster is Bailey Lemmon. Find out more about her film favorites in our Rosebud Questionnaire below. I am from Santa Cruz..., CA, and am currently a sophomore at Westmont College. I am majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Film Studies. I have always had a deep fascination with pop culture - anything involving film, television, music, and fashion. Upon entering college, I have grown a great love for storytelling and have found film to be the most powerful medium in which I experience those stories. 1. What is the first film you remember seeing? I don’t exactly remember the first film I saw, but the first film I watched that encouraged my passion for storytelling was "Whiplash." 2. What is the last film you saw? "Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Story" 3. Which film has had the biggest impact on you and why? "Lady Bird" has had the biggest impact on me because it was the first time I remember truly feeling represented on screen and it urged me to pursue film. 4. Which film or films could you watch over and over? "Lady Bird," "Little Women" (2019), "The Social Network," "Silver Linings Playbook" 5. Which films and directors inspire you? Many of the films that were acknowledged during the 2018 Academy Award season inspired my calling to film. These films include "Lady Bird," "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri," "Get Out," "The Disaster Artist," "Call Me By Your Name," and "I, Tonya." A few directors that I admire are Greta Gerwig, Ava DuVernay, and Jordan Peele. 6. If you could have been a fly on the wall during the making of any film in history, which film would you choose? "Us." 7. What is one of your favorite cinematic sequences? One of my favorite cinematic sequences is at the end of "Lady Bird" when she calls and leaves her mom a voice message after being away at college. She reminisces on the aspects of Sacramento that she loves and asks her mom if she remembers those experiences too while a montage of Lady Bird and her mom in Sacramento plays. 8. Why do you love cinema? I love cinema because I have discovered that it is the most impactful way I can experience other people’s stories and is how I have most felt understood and seen. 9. What is your dream job? To be a late-night television show host or director. 10. What excites you most about joining SBIFF’s Rosebud Program? What excites me most about joining SBIFF’s Rosebud Program is listening and learning directly from experts in the industry and learning how to construct an effective Q&A.

We trust you will know our gratitude as the nation pauses to honor your duty and sacrifice as you served. #VeteransDay
