My smoke alarm went off and I replaced the battery. When it continued beeping I took it off the wall and saw that it should have been replaced a year ago. I had no idea! Both the plastic shell and harness breaks down after years of usage. Additionally, parts get discontinued and technology advances very quickly in the car seat world. Car seats have expiration dates that range from 6-10 years depending on the specific car seat manufacturer and specific seat. You can find the expiration date on the car seat itself or look it up in your car seat manual (or ask me). Smoke detectors are good for anywhere from 5-10 years depending on the specific model. Smoke Detectors expire because the sensors degrade over time and they no longer function properly. Carbon monoxide and smoke/CO combination alarms need to be replaced every 5-7 years. This car seat appointment was quite a discovery (sorry had to do it)! There is no right way to arrange multiple car seats in a car. The safest way is the way all seats are installed correctly, allowing the parent/caregiver to buckle in the children properly every time. For this car it meant we put one forward facing car seat in the third row and put the other car seats outboard in the second row.
