Skip overseeding this fall and save. Consider that getting ryegrass seed to germinate requires watering three times a day or more. By not overseeding, over 8,000 gallons of water can be saved for every 1,000 square feet of grass each season. In contrast, dormant warm weather grasses only need to be watered once a month from November to February even less if we get winter rains.

Drink water and prevent weight gain while working from home. Drinking water helps you lose weight by acting as an effective appetite suppressant so you will feel fuller and eat less all with zero calories! Drinking plenty of water also prevents fluid retention, because your body won’t try to retain water if it’s getting enough.

Include regular water breaks as part of your back to school plan. Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps to improve concentration and cognition, balance your mood and emotions, maintain memory function and prevent and relieve headaches. Photo credit: @nelsonmaart via Twenty20

California’s heatwave is expected to last all week! To avoid power outages, we have to do our part NOW to save energy. Pre-cool your home overnight and in the early morning at 72 and, from 3-10pm, set your A/C at 78 or higher and avoid using major appliances. Sign up for alerts here: flexalert.org

We have a heatwave on its way! Tap water is safe, affordable and tastes good, so make it your drink of choice and stay hydrated!

Being well-hydrated is essential for good health ... especially during the summer months when we need to increase our fluid intake to counteract warmer temperatures and higher humidity. When possible hydrate with tap water. Western Heights tap water is as healthy or healthier than bottled water:)

July is Smart Irrigation Month. It’s a fact that up to 70 percent of residential water use is for landscape. One of the most effective ways to conserve water is to irrigate efficiently. Check out this helpful Watering Calculator tool for help in estimating the correct amount of water to give your landscape or garden every week during normal weather conditions. http://www.bewaterwise.com/calculator.html

The best way to wash your car is to take it to a commercial car wash where the water can be recycled. If you don’t have the time or the cash to spare, fill up a bucket full of water and use that to sponge down the car. A bucket holds about two gallons of water, so compared to a five-minute hose-down, you’ll save anywhere from 23 to 98 gallons. Photo credit: @JulieK via Twenty20

Happy Independence Day! Whether you are celebrating alone or with friends consider serving tap water in refillable pitchers or dispensers, that family and friends can pour into glasses or reusable water bottles instead of bottled water. Enjoy Western Heights' amazing drinking water and do your part to limit plastic pollution.

Lead Service Line Update for WHWC Shareholders: As required by State law (SB1398 and SB427) Western Heights Water Company has inventoried the system and developed a plan to remove lead pipes, fittings, or other pieces of equipment up to each property owner’s water meter, to meet state requirements. Pipes and fittings on the customer side of the water meter the water lines between the water meter and the home are the responsibility of the homeowner/shareholder to replace. If you have service lines that were installed before 2006, you may have piping or fittings that contain lead. You may want to check and possibly replace them.
