I realize this is far from a recent picture but it reminds me of how much l loved Billy Jax Chex. He was my partner as l went through vet school, moved to Texas for 3 years, and eventually landing in So Cal. My current horse, Saxon, reminds me of him in many ways. ALso a reminder that you have one day left to submit a photo to us of you and your equine friends by responding in the comments, sending us a DM, or sending us an email to [email protected] by 5 P.M. P.S.T. on Sunday, December 13th. The winner, chosen based on cuteness, will be announced on Monday, December 14th and will receive a gift basket of horse-themed goodies!!! We can't wait to see all your submissions! #EquineVetLife #AnimalHealth #NationalHorseDay

In 2004, Congress designated December 13 as National Horse Day and, since then, Americans have been taking the day to celebrate and appreciate the economic, historic, and cultural contributions that horses have made in America and around the world. Here at West Coast Equine, we are getting in on the fun this year, by hosting a competition for you all! Submit a photo to us of you and your equine friends by responding in the comments, sending us a DM, or sending us an email to [email protected] by 5 P.M. P.S.T. on Sunday, December 13th. Now this one our favorite sites to see when visiting the 2020 crop of foals for their initial vaccinations! Did you know? Most foals need their vaccines at 5 months of age with a booster again at 6 months. After this, we recommend vaccinating 1-2 times a year depending on the particular needs of your horse. Congratulations to the Lopez and Arias family with the addition of this beautiful filly #equinevetlife #animalhealth

Sequestrum- now that's a word to win with in Scrabble! Occasionally, a traumatic injury over a bone can result in a piece of bone becoming fractured or damaged, and eventually separating from the parent bone due to loss of blood supply. The bone fragment is called a sequestrum. We usually suspect this condition when a wound fails to completely heal and has continued drainage. Sometimes probing the area will reveal a loose piece of bone and the source of infection. Other times radiographs may be needed for a full evaluation. In this picture, a yearling had an injury in her shoulder area from running through a gate. After removal of the bone fragments, the area healed up nicely. #equinevetlife #animalhealth
