Hi world Meet Francis River, our new amazing Farm Manager. Francis is a farmer and educator specializing in organic and biologically intensive practices. He has worked on a wide range of farms, from Community Supported Agriculture farms to Urban Community Farms, and has served as a Youth Environmental Educator for K5 - 5th grade. His passion is to build food systems based on giving back to the community in the form of donating food, and educating and empower people to work ...together to grow healthy food. When he’s not growing food, Francis spends his time biking around Los Angeles and teaches pottery classes in the evenings. We are thrilled to have him on the team! Hi all, meet Sara Rupp, GG’s new Programs Manager!! Sara joined the #GrowGood team as an Americorps VISTA member dedicated to expanding our Transitional Employment Program (TEP) and community outreach. Sara is the co-founder of a food recovery program in San Diego and founding member of a community architecture collective in Chile. Take a look at our fantastic new farm signage! This effort was spearheaded by @kalexy123 and the wonderful students at the @pilgrimschoolla ! The signage was designed based on our needs by advanced art students in tandem with Newsom Gonzalez Design. We are especially excited by the signage for our raised garden bed area now named in honor of @torresjayne - our first employee! If you have been to GG, you have probably met Jayne, who worked tirelessly to forward our mission providing #food and #jobs to those in need. Naming the raised bed area after her is the least we could do after her years of selfless work (and putting up with us) and, of course, her commitment to the residents of the shelter and the community at large! Thank you to AZPBS-Cronkite News for highlighting GG’s mission and the work of Eric Tomassini. Eric is leading our farm reboot and is the creator of the highly successful seed to table culinary program at The Salvation Army’s Bell Homeless Shelter. The shelter is one of the largest in the USA housing over 500 clients, around 1/3 of whom are #vets. Did you know that during the Black Plague of London, that a 23-year old mathematics student at Cambridge University by the name of Isaac Newton was sent home for today what we would call self-quarantining. It was during this period of isolation, Newton sat under an Apple tree. When an apple from the tree struck him on the head, the young university student pondered the force that pulled that apple to the earth. The rest is history...the theory of gravity was born Recently, at the #GrowGood farm, a flying orange was seen heading towards @blakeroberta. He caught it and ate it. He says that this event has inspired another, perhaps equally significant scientific breakthrough. What that is, however (at least at the moment) he will not say. (photo cred: @rompton)
