Walnut Creek Youth Leadership Commission 27.01.2021

The Youth Commission is sending out virtual letters to seniors at the Tiffany Court living center! Here are some letters where commissioners check in on seniors and express their thoughts and feelings of the world. Though the pandemic has affected nearly every aspect of life, the Commission continues to adapt and find ways to interact with the community virtually. We post zoom meeting details ahead of time, and we’d love to get some public commentary from community youth, especially in such a pivotal time. Stay tuned! @ Walnut Creek, California

zooming part 3! It’s been such a tough time adjusting, and I’m so happy we can bring the Commission to our homes. I look forward to seeing these amazing faces every other week! Today, Mayor Haskew joined us and gave some city updates; she also shared a bit more about her personal life. Thank you, Mayor Haskew! As some of you may know, our meetings are open to the public; that being said, our next meeting on June 4 will be open for public comment. Feel free to stop by to learn more about what the city’s doing to combat the virus or to learn more about the commission and see us in action! @walnutcreekgov @ Walnut Creek, California

Class of 2020: on College Decision Day, we want to conGRADulate you on (almost) completing your high school journey! It is okay to grieve for a senior year cut short... we look forward to a bright future ahead of you! On behalf of the Youth Commission, I want to congratulate two of our commissioners: Cade and Robbie. Cade, we can’t wait to see what you accomplish at Cal Poly! @c_johnson005. Robbie, whichever college you choose, know that we are proud of you! @robbie.finkel @walnutcreekgov @ Walnut Creek, California

check out our story for a short video of the dispatcher room!- All have given some... some have given all. This week is Dispatcher Appreciation Week! The Youth Commission visited the police department station in February and got a chance to see the dispatcher room.- Dispatchers answer 911 emergency calls, working long hours in one room and multitasking.- Thank you to dispatchers, and the police station at large, for playing such a vital role in our community and keeping us safe!- @walnutcreekpd @walnutcreekgov

THIS is why our commissioners are staying home: out of selflessness for first responders and loved ones, as well as hope for a better future. it’s important to put one’s self in other people’s shoes, and consider how our loved ones (especially older relatives) would do anything and everything to help us too. Grieve for lost family members. Grieve for first responders risking their lives everyday, unsure of what tomorrow holds for them. Grieve for the state of the world.... Students, It’s okay to be sad over prom, graduation, school closures, senior trips, and various other cancellations. All emotions are valid. As Kitty O’Meara states in her now-famous poem, the people joined together again...and created new ways to heal fully, as they had been healed. As life eventually goes back to normal, we will not take simple things like going to school, hanging out with family and friends, and other simple pleasures of life for granted. Looking at the bright side, let’s be thankful for shelter, food, and this community for unifying it’s people. Let’s grow together. @walnutcreekgov #istayhomefor See more
