With the current Harvey Weinstein stories in the news it's a good time for thinking about this issue. In my job as an attorney representing injured workers I have heard to many stories of women being sexually harassed at work. Supervisors demanding sex in exchange for women keeping their job, or getting a better shift, under the threat of termination. Yes it does happen, and is more common than most can imagine. Many of these women harassed are afraid to report this, as they ...are afraid they will lose their jobs, and be blamed for what happened. Many of those who sexually harass women in the workplace do it over and over again, knowing they have the means and the swagger to blame it on the victims, and hold that threat over their victims in case this harassment is ever reported. We can do better than this. If you witness sexual harassment happening at work, or anywhere else, say something. when you hear others say things like, "it was her fault," express your opinion about that. Encourage those who are victims of sexual harassment to report it. I have found that most sexual harassment in the workplace is caused by those who repeatedly do it, and just like Harvey Weinstein, you may find others who will be encouraged to step forward.
