Interesting case study; older horse came in today that clearly had not had farrier attention in awhile. Completely non-weight bearing on LH, all four toes worn away and he was resting periodically on all four toes to take pressure off the other three. Tom was able to rebuild his two hind feet with half pads and glue. Already the horse was trying out weight on the LH. He will get a day or two to readjust to his new hind angles and then his two front feet will be rebuilt.

High-tech shoes enable high-performance athletes to compete at their best. Tom has recently started utilizing Impact Gel pads by Horse Trax for Horses jumping bigger fences and horses who have struggled with severe chronic lameness. The gel pad acts as a very soft cushion for a horse landing off a bigger fence OR a horse who has had a long-term soreness issue to allow more comfort and force distribution as the hoof lands. These pads are just one of the many different types of solutions we can offer for your horse.

This is a model of the vascular system of the hoof. Is that not eye-opening! It is critical for a Farrier to understand the physiology and anatomy of not just the hoof, but the entire equine musculoskeletal system. They must also account for the horse’s current and projected job, current way of going, any acute or chronic injuries, and the overall health of the equine athlete. When you engage a Farrier to shoe your horse, you are not just getting shoes slapped on their feet. Would you want to run a marathon or do the 400m high hurdles in a pair of converse beach shoes? Farriers blend physics, mechanics, and horsemanship into a science and art. The technology available today to keep your horse sound and performing at his best is better than ever.
