After 20 years of studying Tibetan Buddhism at Sera Monastery, he dedicated ...his life to teaching Buddhism and spreading Dharma around the world. Lama Norbu left Tibet at age 11 and studied Buddhism in the Gelugpa lineage. He was ordained in Sera Mey Monastery in 1987, then earned a Geshe degree (the equivalent to a Ph.D. in philosophy) and eventually came to the U.S. He first acted as spiritual director of Dharma Center in Phoenix, and lives in California and serves as president and spiritual leader of the New Century Foundation. Most recently, he released the book "Love Sutra Lama." The Friends of the Monterey Public Library and the Monterey Public Library Endowment Committee invite you to a talk by maritime author and historian JoAnn Semones about her book Pirates, Pinnacles & Petticoats: Shipwrecks of Point Pinos & Monterey Bay on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. The event takes place at Wave Street Studios, 774 Wave St., Monterey, CA. Pirates, Pinnacles & Petticoats: Shipwrecks of Point Pinos & Monterey Bay offers readers a glimpse into California before statehood and a history about the oldest active lighthouse on the Pacific Coast that brims with tales of tragic shipwrecks, daring adventurers, notorious smugglers, intriguing authors, gritty sea captains, and the first women lighthouse keepers on the West Coast. JoAnn Semones, Ph.D., boarded her first ship at age three. The voyage, made aboard the E.D. Patrick, left a lasting impression. She has loved sea sagas ever since. Her other books, Sea of Troubles, Shipwrecks, Scalawags, and Scavengers, and Hard Luck Coast, focus on shipwrecks at the Point Sur, Pigeon Point, and Point Montara lighthouses. As a consultant with the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and California State Parks, she has written interpretive materials for exhibits at Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park and Año Nuevo State Park. She is featured in a video highlighting local maritime history which is part of a new permanent exhibit entitled Ships of the World at the San Mateo County History Museum.
