Check out this ABC7 story on what we do at our Street Level Cycles program!

Waterside Workshops 11.01.2021

We will be CLOSED until January 5th for our winter break. Thank you all for sticking with us this year and we can’t wait to see you in 2021. Happy New Year!

Waterside Workshops 04.01.2021

This photo was taken on our first big outdoor trip of 2020. Last February, we packed our van full of kids and gear, and headed off to Tahoe to enjoy the slopes. In the evenings, we ate big family-style dinners together around the table, joking and reminiscing about all the fun we had that day. The rest of the night was spent schooling each other at board games until the tiring day on the slopes sent us all to bed early. The absence of these experiences reminds us all how spe...cial, and how important, they are to our youth and to our community. We can't wait to restart these outdoor trips once it is safe to do so next year. To all of you who have supported us this year, whether it was by donating a bike, making a monetary donation, or just sending a note to check in and make sure we were OK, thank you! We appreciate you everyday, and can't wait to see you in our community open shop or renting a boat in 2021. From our family to yours, wishing you all the best in 2021. And if you haven't had a chance to donate yet, there's still time to make a year end gift!

Today is #givingtuesday and we need your help to get free bikes to 75 youth in need! Our staff and youth interns have been busy fixing bikes to donate to low income youth. Please make a donation to bring a smile to a kid's face this holiday season. This year has reminded us that the bicycle is not only a healthy and environmentally friendly way to get around, it is also a safe way to have fun and get some exercise during a pandemic. In 2020, people have been getting back on bicycles in record numbers, and we want to make sure that youth of all backgrounds have the same opportunity. Thank you for your support!

At update from the boat shop floor: We are three planks away from the shutter-plank of our traditionally constructed, wooden rowboat/sailboat. We are planking her with Western Red Cedar on-top of steam-bent, white oak frames, fastened with copper rivets. This traditional construction is a very beautiful process, tedious, but it gives our advanced students and staff a great challenge. The waterproof nature of the boat will not be from adhesives or fiberglass, rather it will b...e waterproof just from the craftsmanship of the closely matched wooden joints. We are also repairing a couple of rotted-out spots in our Cape Ann Dory. This boat has been a fun and useful boat. We use it to motor around the Aquatic Park and has been very useful for lake camping trips. She deserves a second life (or is it the third?)! We are sistering frames, cutting out rot, and replacing sections. We are also adding watertight bulkheads and decking for greater safety so the dory is not just a open-boat. #woodenboats

We have taken a couple of beach trips to Pacifica the past two weeks. Our youth have been learning ocean safety, getting comfortable in an ocean/shore environment, and learning surfing basics. It has been hard to get them out of the water at the end of the day! It has also been a welcome change from high school classes on Zoom and being stuck inside due to poor air quality.

Waterside Workshops 22.02.2020

Today is Giving Tuesday and we need your help to get more youth outdoors! Your support will allow us to provide free, life-changing experiences for over 50 low-income youth in 2020. This year, we played in the snow in Tahoe, watched sea otters in Monterey, backpacked 11 miles of rugged coastal trail for three days in Point Reyes, stood at the base of Yosemite falls, rode horses on the beach in Mendocino, surfed the waves in Pacifica, slept under the ancient redwoods in Humbol...dt Redwoods State Park, paddled our outrigger canoe through rough water around Alcatraz, snorkeled over vibrant coral reefs in Hawaii, and rode mountain bikes through the hills of Marin. Each one of these trips marked a pivotal moment for a young person. It could have been their first time camping under the redwoods, first time sledding down a snow-covered hill, or first time snorkeling in the ocean. Or maybe it was simply a quiet few days away from the city to finally let their guard down. These trips are completely free for our youth; we provide all food, gear, and transportation. Thanks to a generous grant from a local family foundation, we will be getting a new 10-passenger van for our outdoor adventures! Please help us reach our goal to raise an additional $30,000 to fund six multi-day camping trips and monthly day trips to parks across California in 2020. Please donate today!
