We can’t let the east coast animals have all the fun! River otter brothers enjoyed a snow day of their own thanks to a special delivery brought down from higher... elevations. Eureka almost never gets snow, so it’s extra fun when the animals experience it! Thanks to Keepers and Redwood Coast AAZK for the snow and behind-the-scenes peek. #otters #SnowDay #Humboldt #Eureka #California #Zoo #Animals See more

February 12, 2021 Important Information for Students/Families Mensaje importante para estudiantes / familias... Greetings Eureka City Schools Families, As I have reported previously, the School Board has determined that in-person instruction will be an option following the availability of the second dose of the COVID vaccination to our staff. We have been working closely with Humboldt County Public Health to expedite the availability. The good news is that all of our staff are now eligible to receive the first vaccination. It will take time to get our 500+ vaccinations to be administered and we will also be required to wait for the period between vaccinations and for the second dose to take effect. In the meantime, we have been hosting hundreds of students for in-person instruction at Winzler Children’s Center, intervention classes, self-contained classrooms for students with disabilities, and some classes at sites that use equipment not available at home. Also, athletic conditioning and club activities have resumed, pending the approval of their COVID safety plans. If you have a specific question, please contact your student’s site. Please remember, in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday break, there will be no school instruction on Monday, February 15th through Friday, February 19th. On Monday, February 22nd, distance learning and the limited in-person options mentioned earlier in this message will resume. Meal delivery into neighborhoods and at our sites will not be offered next week but will resume on Monday, February 22nd. As students return to in-person instruction, please be advised, all students must wear a face covering and follow travel advisory and contact quarantines as directed by Humboldt County Public Health. Please pause and consider your plans for safe interaction with others. Please follow the advice of Humboldt County Public Health to help keep your family and our community safe. Stay healthy and stay strong! This message will be posted on our website and Facebook. Fred Van Vleck, Ed.D. ¡Mantente saludable y fuerte! Fred Van Vleck, Ed. D. Superintendente

Mr. DeHart's class has reached 50 straight days of PERFECT ATTENDANCE! What a HUGE accomplishment that could not have been achieved without teamwork between the teacher, students, and families. Way to go, 3rd graders, and congratulations, Mr. Dehart!

At a recent staff meeting, teachers were asked what their thoughts were surrounding our current state of education and how far we have come since March. I can’t help but share what these dedicated professionals had to say. Listed below are words and phrases that were stated by the teachers. Families stepped up. Kids are resilient. I feel connected to our families. We are working as a team. Families have grown with us. We are all embracing this. I have trust. ...Families and teachers are a team. Everyone adapted and was flexible. We all have a growth mindset. There is always a silver lining. Our students are tech-savvy. I am proud of the families, students and our staff. We are raising the bar, even from a distance. I will never be the same teacher. Families have seen how important education is. Everyone is giving it their all. I am impressed with myself. I haven’t lost my touch, even on a screen. We have continued our high level of expectations and levels of support. This takes a village. What we have accomplished has been mind-blowing. Since we have had a few kids back for intervention, I realize there is nothing like the real thing. Students have become independent. Students are taking control of their learning. Always hang on to the positive. As you can see, your children are in good hands. We clearly appreciate the support of our families. I am so proud of our Otter community! ~ Principal Beall
