October 27 marks the anniversary of the birth of one of America's most gifted poets. At the age of 21, Sylvia Plath's struggle with clinical depression resulted in her being hospitalized and subjected to electroshock therapy, an experience she was later to develop into her autobiographical novel, "The Bell Jar", a scathing account of mental health treatment available to women in the 1950s. Before her tragic suicide at the age of 30, Sylvia Plath produced some of the most intensely confessional verse of the modern age, shaping nearly overwhelming emotions into flawlessly crafted poems. In 1982 she was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her "Collected Poems" which contains poetry written from 1956 until her death.
