Trainer Tip Tuesday: Halloween is right around the corner! Although this year looks very different than usual, you will still hopefully find yourself surrounded by piles of candy on October 31st Since chocolate and other sugary treats can be dangerous for your pooch, teach them the "leave it" command before they have the chance to snatch your goodies. The "leave it" command teaches your dog that they absolutely cannot have the item you are asking them to ignore, whether it be candy during the holiday, your morning croissant, or anything else!

Trainer Tip Tuesday: We aren't all social butterflies. And that's okay! While owning a nervous or shy dog can be a little overwhelming at first, here are some tips to help your Nervous Nellie work through their insecurities: 1 Have a scheduled walk or daycare routine. Dogs love consistency and knowing what's next! ... 2 Advocate for your dog: Politely let other people and dog owners know to give your dog space. 3Set time aside specifically for working on meeting new people, and only meet people/dogs you know are safe (our trainers are always happy to help!) to avoid situations that can set back any progress you've made. 4 Reward all good behavior. Whether with their favorite treat or tons of verbal praise, let your dog know their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Maybe they were finally able to walk over that scary storm drain, or made it through a particularly loud street; talk to your dog and let them know they're doing a good job! 5Finally, set small goals for you and your dog: Going to new places and working in different situations will help build confidence and a strong foundation, but go slowly. Practice and consistency are key for helping your pup overcome their fears!

Trainer Tip Tuesday: Have more than one dog at home? Be sure to work on training with them together and separately! Working with your dogs separately while using positive reinforcement helps improve their responses to cues and can help you maintain your bond with them! Working with your dogs at the same time can help them continue to learn under distraction. Try working on recall separately in your home in a non-distracting environment. Later, once they're back to playing, call them over from a short distance away with extra yummy treats. Keep practicing this until they are able to quickly break away from the fun to completely focus on you. By practicing a few times every play session and getting further and further away each time, you will be able improve their recall skills. A behavior that isn't practiced, is forgotten!
