In 2014, Mr. Richard Miller received the Farmers' Insurance Trial Gladiator Award in recognition of his outstanding trial results. This award is presented to a trial defense lawyer annually and was given to Mr. Miller as a result of his achievement representing a Farmers insured. In this case, Plaintiff was a potential buyer of a home being shown by defendant, a realtor. Plaintiff went up a wooden staircase to the second floor and when she came down, the staircase came off... its moorings. She suffered a skull fracture with external bleeding within the skull cavity, claimed mild traumatic brain injury, a wrist fracture and ankle fracture. There was $78,000 in medical bills, a claim for $35,000 in future medical expenses, $41,500 in past loss of earnings, and they claimed $528,000 in loss of earning capacity due to a lower work life expectancy due to her head injury. They demanded the $2million insurance policy from Farmers. Farmers offered $1.2M. Mr. Miller tried the case for Farmers, representing the realtor, who was alleged to have failed to inspect the home to make it safe for guests. At trial, plaintiff's counsel asked for $15 million.
