Thank you Art Bridges for supporting the Vincent Price Art Museum! VPAM is proud to be a recipient of the Bridge Ahead Initiative grant. This initiative is a crisis relief program created to support museums impacted by coronavirus (COVID-19). This grant has allowed VPAM to keep its staff intact and maintain essential operations during these uncertain times. With this aid our team has been able to continue their work on cross-disciplinary programs and exhibitions that tackl...e issues of historical, social, and cultural relevance. "Art Bridges’ grant sustains the museum while we are closed to the public, and their investment in our efforts advance diversity, cultural equity, and new directions in the arts and museum field." - words from VPAM Foundation Board Chair, Barbara Hensleigh. "Art Bridges is committed to supporting our partners as they provide greater access to American art in their communities, even while their doors are closed," said Alice Walton, founder of Art Bridges, in an article by Philanthropy News Digest. #ArtBridges

Today we look back at our 2011 exhibition After the Gold Rush: Reflections and Postscripts on the National Chicano Moratorium of August 29, 1970 guest curated by Vincent Ramos. The exhibition commemorated the events that took place fifty years ago on this day while simultaneously bringing together nearly 30 exhibiting artists and activists together in intergenerational dialogue. From curatorial text by Vincent Ramos: On August 29th 1970, an estimated 30,000 Chicanas and Ch...icanos from across the United States gathered in East Los Angeles in a show of cultural and political unity, to stage a march and rally in opposition to the Vietnam War. What began as a peaceful protest meant to call attention to the disproportionate number of Chicano soldiers then dying on the battlefields of Southeast Asia, ultimately ended amidst a similar type of ‘war zone’ environment when local law enforcement agencies unjustly converged on the demonstrators. Their unprovoked actions incited numerous acts of violence in the form of arrests, injuries, and [four] deaths, including that of Los Angeles Times journalist Ruben Salazar. Known as the Chicano Moratorium, it is a seminal event not only in the history of the Chicano civil rights movement, but within the larger history of American social protest as well. VPAM honors this critical event in our city’s history while also reflecting on our current moment. Just like 50 years ago, demonstrators exercising their right to protest are being met with extreme violence, provocation, and arrest by law enforcement. The fierce legacy of those who participated in the National Chicano Moratorium lives on in the important work of artists and organizers today who are working against a new yet interrelated set of injustices including police brutality, mass incarceration, and immigrant detention, among others. We continue to be inspired by the spirit of this important work. #ChicanoMoratorium #AntiwarMovement #LAUpheaval #LosAngelesHistory #RubenSalazar #DevraWeber #VincentRamos / #VPAM #MyCommunityMyMuseum #LatinxArtsAll
