SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27. As we near the end of the 2020 apple harvest season, we want to thank all of our apple pickers by announcing a very special FINALE DAY for the 2020 harvest. Tomorrow, Sunday, September 27, the price for all picking bags will be cut to $10 and no admission fees will be charged. Plenty of ripe, right now, EMPIRE, JONATHAN and GOLDEN DELIICIOUS apples remain to be harvested and we look forward to a great crowd to finish the harvest and close out our 2020 season. We anticipate that Sunday will be the last day of the harvest and there will not be a Monday picking day.

Super Sellers! Ash and Desert have been with us all four seasons. They are just the best! OK UPDATE! We still have lots of: JONATHANS, GOLDEN DELISIOUS AND EMPIRES! YES! WE WILL be open this weekend! The Fujis are still not quite ripe. They are the LAST tree in the row on the far WEST side of the orchard. If you want to, try one, but they are still a bit starchy. They will NOT ripen on the counter. If you find a red one, consider yourself lucky.... NEXT WEEKEND (FIRST WEEKEND IN OCTOBER) will probably be our last. So DON'T WAIT! (except for FUJI's).

We have 7 different varieties on our ten acres of apple trees. Most rows are identified by row number and variety signs. The signs are posted on POLES at each end of the row and also at the ends of the rows down the center path. The variety is for the posted ROW, NOT the row across when you turn around! The gravensteins are the earliest to ripen and are only 2 rows; they are mostly gone to the fruit stand. * The green apples on the outer fence perimeter are Pippins. They... are like a Granny Smith and more of a tart, not-so-sweet apple. * On the outer edge of the big poles on the EAST side (where everyone walks) are the beautiful GALA apples (not marked). They are a burnished red-gold and so sweet. *On the outer edge of the big poles on the WEST side (by the big parking lot) are the FUJI's (not marked). They ripen towards the END of the season and will be sweetest then. * Empire apples are just about ready. When ripe, they have a purplish color, and a dusty protective coating. Rub it off when you are ready to eat the apple and it will shine up beautifully. * Jonathan apples are all-round apples. Good to eat, keep well, and just perfect for lunchbox size. They are red with some streaks. Smaller, but more will fit in your bag! * Golden Deliicous apples are just that, delicious. When ripe, they get a golden glow. They sometimes have a brown spotty finish which is just part of how they grow and NOT a sign that they are not good. ** !! PLEASE, when picking the apples, hold the branch above your apple with one hand, and twist and pull with your other hand. TRY NOT to dislodge other apples that are ripe and so will fall on the ground. Many apples are in clusters, so please be careful. * DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERAS AND POST US ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM!

Empire Apples are a beautiful blend of Jonathan and Red Delicious. They ripen to a lovely purple haze that actually protects the apple. When you are ready to eat, rub the dusty haze off the apple (on your jeans?) and enjoy the burst of flavor! We HOPE to open the Friday AFTER Labor Day weekend. We'll be open Friday-Mondays, 9-4:30 (last bag sale) and the gates lock at 5pm. PLEASE observe Covid-19 safety. Wear masks, observe social distancing in the lines and in the orchard. THANK YOU.

It's July 4 and the Empire Apples are large and turning that beautiful deep purple. It looks like it will be a great season. Please do not come by the orchard while the workers are making it beautiful. We'll let you know when we are open and all the details!

So it starts with this -- (actually, the leaves come first, but they can't produce apples on their own!) Around April, the trees begin to produce buds and then delicate pink flowers. Typically, the flowers are in clusters of FIVE blossoms, and the bees busily get to work gathering pollen, thereby pollinating the flowers. Sometimes their legs are so heavy with pollen they can hardly fly! So then, if the blossom has been pollinated, it becomes a baby apple. AND, if all fi...ve blossoms have been pollinated, the cluster becomes five baby apples. These would grow to be bigger apples, but would be way too many to make BIG apples and in many cases, would break the tree branch or the tree would try to drop the apples. We help out by thinning the apples. That means for EACH cluster on ALL 8000 trees, we carefully break off the 2-3-or 4 smallest apples, leaving the largest and strongest for you to pick at the harvest. So, PLEASE be careful when picking your apples at harvest time. (watch this page for dates) Carefully hold the branch above your choice and twist its stem, pulling gently until the apple comes off, and place it in your bag. It will be simply delicious! See more

Baby Apples! Baby Apples are all over the orchard. WAY too many apples for each tree branch to support, soon our workers will begin to thin each cluster to the best apple. For your September enjoyment!
