Welcome to Mercury retrograde, the time during which the planet Mercury appears to be moving backward when viewed from Earth. This one will end on Nov. 3. With the sun rising later, and nightfall coming sooner, today we celebrate the autumnal equinox ("equinox" meaning "equal" and "nox" meaning "night"), the day of the year when day and night are equal in length. Here's to the asters and chrysanthemums in bloom in our gardens, festooned with bright orange pumpkins and yellow corn flowers. Happy autumn!

Dear VML family and friends, Thank you very much for all of your messages of concern and support regarding the fires here in Sonoma County and throughout California. It means a lot to us, and we hope that you all are staying safe and healthy too. Those of you who have visited our tasting room, located in the heart of Dry Creek Valley, know that one of the Valley's most beautiful features is the stunning western border- miles of timberland that extends from far north of us all... the way southwest to the Pacific Ocean. This is the area that is being impacted by the Walbridge fire, threatening communities north of the lower Russian River and west of Healdsburg. Currently, Dry Creek Valley is being heavily protected by fire fighters, and while some of our staff have had to evacuate, and others may still, we are crossing fingers and toes that our Estate property will not be affected. The tasting room closed on Wednesday, and we are not certain when we will be able to reopen. We are doing our best to continue with harvest, precipitated by record heat that proceeded the fires, trying to stay ahead of the smoke and with a greater sense of urgency than we typically have to have bringing grapes in. Living through the pandemic with all of its impacts and adjustments to our personal lives and professional responsibilities, combined with the added complexity of dealing with these fires, fills us all with a sense of deep humbleness and concern for each other, for our community, and for you, our valued customers. Unfortunately due to the evacuation orders in place and the fire in our surrounding area we will remain closed today. Our animlas are safe and being cared for off property, and all our wonderful staff members are safe. We will continue to update you daily!

Due to the fire nearby and current evacuation orders, the winery will be closed until further notice. Our animals have safely been evacuated and all staff is safe. We will keep you updated as the situation changes.

Today is International Pinot Noir Day, and while we never need an excuse to enjoy this Grande Dame of grape varietals, it does make today a very special day at VML. In fact- we love Pinot Noir so much that we make nine of them: San Remo, Sexton, Starscape, Cresta Ridge, Ivywood, Russian River, and of course the Earth, Moon, and Stars! We hope you will be toasting this special day with a special wine from VML. Cheers!
