Don’t be one of those people. Do you know vinyl sales topped CD sales last year? You can’t beat the sound. I'll be selling vinyl at the Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Company along with a bunch of other local collectors! Tonight from 6-9PM in Downtown Fresno!
There's a lot of photography that goes on in an average week at the record store. It seems that people enjoy taking pictures and selfies in front of the large wall of records. Whenever it happens, I'm a little bit flattered that someone would choose my collection as a backdrop... and I must admit I don't mind the free publicity as well! But this week, a friend and customer took it to a new level. Joey Isquierdo showed me a music video of a song he wrote. He chose my shop as one of the locations featured. I'm not sure who his videographer friends are, but they sure did a great job! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0K4W4WHSFU
I picked up some 1960s era "teen music" newspapers the other day, but interestingly these were from Australia. Here's a 1967 artist's rendition of what Mick Jagger might look like at age 65. Not far off at all, except maybe for the hair loss...
This was a figment of my childhood back when I used to check out the vinyl records from the library. Haven't seen one of these in a very long time. Some helpful tips from your local branch.
Getting ready for Christmas a little early with one of the classics...
Sometimes I find reggae records that have odd song and album titles. That isn't Fred laying on the boat, is it?
I'm going to be selling records at the Fresno Grizzlies game tomorrow night, along with numerous other record collector friends... stop by and say hi if you happen to be there!
Found an interesting relic today. This, to my knowledge, is the very first price guide for records ever produced. It came out in 1976 and covers 45s only. At the time, 1950s R&B/Doowop was the king of the heap in collectable records. It's interesting seeing records now worth a few thousand dollars that "catalog" at a hundred bucks. But the opposite is also true, as internet has shown certain records once believed to be very rare... to be not so rare.
I learned something interesting the other day. At the height of the depression in 1932, the record industry sold 6 million records. Yes, that number is for the entire music industry. Nowadays an artist can sell 6 million copies with a single hit album. Not only were people poor, but radio was taking over as peoples' main form of entertainment. Buy a radio and you can hear different stuff all day long, or buy a record and get two songs.
Sometimes you never know what may come in the door of a record store...
My projects for today. A couple of 1950s RCA Victor suitcase record players. Faux alligator finish on the outside. The guy I bought them from said he found them while cleaning out the attic of an old church. These things are a lot of work, but at least it's fun work- soldering new capacitors, cleaning up old grease that has dried up and turned to goo, and one will need a new cartridge.
