"A ghost is an entity that was left unthought-of in the genealogy. (Pierre Ramaut: Transgenerational Psychoanalysis and Shamanism to Heal from Ghosts) Being thought-of - in the form of acknowledgment, recognition, even appreciation - lies at the heart of family trauma integration. Relatives who evoke complex or ambivalent feelings may be harder to be thought-of. Lineage trauma can manifest as outright conflict, but also as unspoken conflict, in the form of family e...strangement. Existing estrangement within one generation makes estrangement within the next generation more likely. Relatives or ancestors who have caused harm within the lineage will want to be thought-of, and if we are unwilling or unable to do so, they become ghosts - a phenomenon in which this person’s imprint, their particular trauma expression is found within the present-day family dynamics. They are there; the less we acknowledge the ghost, the more its presence is felt. The task is to open up to the complexity of feeling that this ghost may evoke, and to be with this complexity in its depth. Learning to relate to this complexity, perhaps ambivalence is the work of trauma integration within the lineage. See more
