Did you know financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases? This form of abuse, although less frequently discussed and understood than other, more visible forms of abuse, is one of the most powerful ways of gaining control over a survivor. Perpetrators know that controlling a survivor’s finances effectively keeps them trapped in the abuse. Surveys of survivors show that worries over their ability to provide financially for themselves and their children continues... to be one of the top reasons for staying in or returning to an abusive partner. Financial abuse can look like: A partner not allowing a survivor to work, a partner withholding money or providing an allowance, sabotaging work or employment opportunities, or not allowing a survivor to access bank accounts. According to The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, "Victims of coerced debt may face massive barriers to economic self-sufficiency, including struggling to find a job or even obtaining a place to live after leaving an abuser due to debt and its detrimental effects on their personal credit scores." If you or someone you know is in need of help, call Sonoma County YWCA anytime at (707) 546-1234.
