This hive was removed from a column of a pool cabana in #Ojai. The queen was a fast runner! This hive is only 7 days old! Once a bee swarm has chosen a place to start building, the hive can grow to be several pounds within the first week or two. A Tale of Two Sheds This past weekend, we completed two identical removals from bees that had built their lovely home under the floor of a backyard shed. The first hive located in #Ventura was very docile and had a lot of brood (baby bees). During the removal, I was able to observe some of the brood emerging from the cells. The second hive located in #Ojai was very aggressive and needed to be re-queened. During this removal, bees from a neighboring hive attempted to rob the honey of this hive. both colonies were relocated to an #apiary in #Ventura. #flir #backyardbeekeeping #savethebees #beethesolution #shed #beerescue #venturabeerescue #beeremoval

Inspecting my hives at the #apiary, I found that #supercedure cells in a hive that recently swarmed. These cells are where the virgin queen bees will be raised. The first virgin queen bee to emerge from one of these supercedure cells will likely become the new queen and pierce the other cells with her stinger, killing off any competition, thus ensuring she is the only queen in the colony. As I was checking on my bees, I had two visitors come by to say, "hello." #beekeeping #apiary #queenbee #beethesolution #beerescue

These bees found refuge in a compost bin in #Ventura. They did not mind building their home among the banana peels. They were very aggressive. These bees were re-queened to calm the hive and were relocated to an apiary in #Ojai.
