A lot of my patients are turning to vape pens as a way of weaning off cigarettes. There’s a danger, though, that you should be aware of: when you inhale fumes from a vape pen, you’re directly drawing potentially toxic metals into your lungs. A friend of mine recently pointed out to me that there was a substance that could replace dental fillings. I did some research and found out that in an article in Nature.com published in January of this year titled "Promotion of Natural Tooth Repair by Small Molecule GSK3 antagonists", the authors Neves et al, report that a chemical titled Tideglusib can get tertiary dentin to form when placed on a resorbable sponge and put near primary dentin in a tooth. What this could mean for the dental field is that we can conserve a lot more tooth structure when we do fillings. Hooray for science.

A recent review of the studies correlating periodontal health and marijuana use concludes that chronic smoking (tobacco or cannabis) is a risk factor for gum disease. :-(

MEET DR CHRISTOPHER LAI Dr. Christopher Lai has great clinical skills and a really interesting background. He participated in AmeriCorp and for a few years was in the National Technical Institute for the deaf in American Sign Language Program. He graduated from UCLA’s school of dentistry and studied orthodontics at Marquette University. Dr. Lai does Invisalign, metal braces, clear braces, and anything from complex orthodontics to simple tooth uprighting. He has been practicing dentistry since 2007. His hobbies include learning about business development, Krav Maga, and traveling to far exotic destinations to cross off items on his bucket list. His idea of relaxation would be to sip coffee in a coffee shop in Paris all day untill the sun sets.
