Ouch! Did you just trip and fall on your hand to catch yourself, and now your hand hurts? Then you might have just suffered a Scaphoid Fracture! The scaphoid is a one of eight small bones in the wrist, and connects two different rows of bones together. It's fairly common for a scaphoid fracture to occur, resulting in pain at the base of the thumb that gets worse with the use of the hand. Treatment of this kind of fracture is critical; whereas most fractures take about six weeks to heal with treatment, scaphoid fractures take about twelve weeks with treatment, or up to six months without treatment. Definitely a thumbs down on that one! We're open and ready to give you a hand with any bone or joint problems you might be experiencing. Could your drink choice affect your bone health? An aggregate study by the Cleveland Clinic (found at this link: https://cle.clinic/2RKsL5r) found that soda and coffee lead to lower bone density in men and women. The exact cause for why they cause this is debated; it could be attributed to the phosphoric acid in soda, the caffeine in both drinks, or the choice of drinking these beverages over drinks like milk that are much better for bone health. In any case, be sure to include a variety of beverage choices in your diet; a little sweetness is okay, but be sure to balance your food and drinks for maximum healthiness! It probably goes without saying that fruits and vegetables are an important part of your diet, but did you know that they're an important part of your bone health, too? A study published by the National Institutes of Health found that middle-aged and elderly participants that ate around 460 grams of fruit per day - about 5 to 6 fruits or vegetables - had increased bone mass density and lower presence of osteoporosis. Make sure to pick up some extra fruits and veggies on your next grocery store run! Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is similar to the more well-known Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in that both can affect the nerves in your hand and wrist, and both are also caused by overuse and strain. The difference is the location: the Carpal Tunnel is the narrow passageway on the palm side of the wrist, whereas the Cubital Tunnel runs through the arm and up to the elbow and "funny bone" joints, following the Ulnar Nerve that connects the hand and arm to the neck. While treatment can be as simple as ceasing the action that causes the overuse of the Cubital Tunnel, sometimes splints or other treatments are necessary. For a check-up or treatment of this and many other bone and joint problems, visit our website at https://www.vobj.com/ and schedule an appointment at our Valley Orthopaedic locations in Modesto or Manteca today!

This coming Monday, March 30th, is observed as National Doctor's Day. It's especially important to recognize it this year, as our nation's doctors, nurses, EMTs and first responders fight against COVID-19. This Monday, call or message any medical personnel you know personally and thank them for their service. Feel free to give them a shout-out in the comments below, and share this post so we can get stories from all over the valley! If you have spare medical masks, thermomet...ers, gloves, or other PPE, please donate them to your local hospitals. Most importantly, please stay home as much as you can to reduce the spread. For National Doctor's Day this year, we need to show more than gratitude to our nation's doctors; we need to show our support for the wonderful work they do for us. Valley Orthopaedic Bone and Joint stands with our fellow medical workers, and we'll be open right alongside them, doing what we can to help you.
