Unhealthy Relationship Sign #3: Manipulation When someone tries to control your decisions, actions or emotions. Manipulation is often hard to spot, because it can be expressed in subtle or passive-aggressive ways. You know you’re being manipulated if someone is trying to convince you to do things you don’t feel comfortable doing, ignores you until they get their way, or tries to influence your feelings. (from One Love Foundation) Are you picking up the theme of these unheal...thy relationship signs? Control. It's at the root of abusive behavior. If this is happening in your relationship, call our 24/7 crisis line at 209.722. 4357 or chat with us at rc.chat/vcc for free and confidential help. Getting to share the full truth about your life with someone and have that person accept and love you? Amazing Guiding youth toward healthy relationships means that we have to share the good things they need to look for in a relationship. Healthy Relationship Sign #3: Honesty You can be truthful and candid without fearing how the other person will respond. In a healthy relationship, you should feel like you can share the full truth about your life and feelings with each ...other you will never have to hide things. They may not like what you have to say, but will respond to disappointing news in a considerate way. Relationships can be confusing, especially for youth who are dating for the first time! Talking with them about signs that a relationship is unhealthy helps them identify when their partner's behavior is not okay. Unhealthy Relationship Sign #2: Possessiveness When someone is jealous to a point where they try to control who you spend time with and what you do. While jealousy is a normal human emotion, it becomes unhealthy when it causes someone to control or lash out at you.... This means getting upset when you text or hang out with people they feel threatened by, wrongly accusing you of flirting or cheating, or even going so far as to stalk you. Possessiveness is often excused as being overprotective or having really strong feelings for someone. Healthy Relationship Sign #2: Trust Confidence that your partner won’t do anything to hurt you or ruin the relationship. In a healthy relationship, trust comes easily and you don’t have to question the other person’s intentions or whether they have your back. They respect your privacy and would never put you through a test to prove your loyalty. Content warning: Depiction of physical scars We are grateful to Azaria Harris, a student at Valley Community School in Los Banos, for sharing her art with us. Azaria created these pieces after watching a virtual art gallery created by our campus advocate and participating in a lesson plan about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Beautiful work!

Thank you to the Merced City Council, Los Banos City Council, and Merced County Board of Supervisors for recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month! Here is what the proclamation from the Board of Supervisors says: Whereas October is annually recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month; and,... Whereas Valley Crisis Center received 974 domestic violence calls on their crisis hotline, held 600 peer counseling sessions, provided legal assistance to 166 survivors, and sheltered 79 adults and children during the period of July 2019 to June 2020; and, Whereas the Coronavirus Pandemic has shown that so many people are still not safe in their own homes because of domestic violence; and, Whereas creating a safe community without domestic violence requires us to end all other forms of violence, including racism, sexism, ableism, and homophobia; and, Whereas survivors of domestic violence need access to affordable housing, jobs that pay living wages, and adequate healthcare in order to rebuild their lives; and, Whereas we must invest in violence prevention programs that address trauma and teach healthy relationship skills in order to stop intergenerational cycles of domestic violence; and, Whereas survivors deserve to be heard, believed, and respected as they seek accountability, justice, and healing; Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, We, the Merced County Board of Supervisors do hereby proclaim the month of October 2020 Domestic Violence Awareness Month and encourage all community members to participate in Valley Crisis Center’s planned activities for the month of October.

It's time for Purple Light Nights! Hang up a string of purple lights or switch out your porch light with a purple bulb. We will be celebrating Purple Light Nights now to October 31. Post a picture, tag us, and use the hashtag #PurpleLightNights209. By shining a light, we remember the victims who lost their lives to domestic violence, support those who have survived, and spread hope to those still living with abuse.
