Praise to the Lord the Almighty is a hymn based on Joachim Neander’s German hymn Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren, published in 1680. Neander was born in 1650 Bremen, Germany. In his youth, he lived on the wild side before attending a local service and listening to a visiting preacher. He adopted the beliefs of the Pietist and suffered considerable opposition for his beliefs. He died at the age of 30. However, he wrote over 60 songs in his life time. ...Most are hymns of joyful praise, even though they were written at a time when Neander was living under considerable stress. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation! Come, all who hear; now to his temple draw near, join me in glad adoration. Praise to the Lord, above all things so wondrously reigning; sheltering you under his wings, and so gently sustaining! Have you not seen all that is needful has been sent by his gracious ordaining? Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, if with his love he befriends you. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him. Let the Amen sound from his people again; gladly forever adore him. https://youtu.be/VGAaRtkovZQ

Thoro Harris wrote hundreds of Christian songs. He published hundreds of other songs he didn’t write. He was one of the most prolific African-American hymn writers of the early 2oth century. Since the 1930s his compositions have been consistently selected for publication in hymnals of various denominations. Thoro was born in Washington D.C. to a father who was a black doctor and a mother who was white. He attended college in Battle Creek, Michigan. Afterwards, he moved to... Boston, Massa-chusetts where, in 1902, he produced the first of many hymnals. Since not many episodes from his life are available, we will let the lyrics of All that thrills my soul is Jesus speak for him. Who can cheer the heart like Jesus, by His presence all divine? True and tender, pure and precious, O how blest to call Him mine! Refrain: All that thrills my soul is Jesus, He is more than life to me; and the fairest of ten thousand in my blessed Lord I see. Love of Christ so freely given, grace of God beyond degree, mercy higher than the heaven, deeper than the deepest sea! What a wonderful redemption! Never can a mortal know how my sin, though red like crimson, can be whiter than the snow. Every need His hand supplying, every good in Him I see; on His strength divine relying, He is all in all to me. By the crystal flowing river with the ransomed I will sing, and forever and forever praise and glorify the King. https://youtu.be/zqi4GXkyaDY
