Ride Program Flourishes with the Introduction of Lyft In 2015, VTrans began offering Lyft as a transportation option for individuals with disabilities and senior citizens. This option gives clients the freedom to access doctor appointments, grocery shopping, employment and training. Since the introduction of Lyft, program participation has doubled and riders are reporting great experiences with Lyft drivers. Lyft has become a vital option for individuals with a wide range of... disabilities from visual impairment to epilepsy. Edelia, a future Lyft rider who stopped by the office to receive training on using the app and how to schedule a ride, informed staff that she is excited about the opportunity to go shopping and get to doctor appointments without having to burden family members. The Ride program is available to individuals with disabilities and senior citizens who reside in the San Bernardino Valley. The program gives clients the ability to get out and join their community by providing up to $40 per month in taxi fare or Lyft credit to access doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and employment or training. For more information on the program or to sign-up contact VTrans at (909) 981-5099 or [email protected].
Chino Hills College Student Completes Travel Training Jimmy is a Chino Hills resident who currently attends Chaffey College and the Chaffey Learning Development Center. During the school year, Jimmy was referred to Valley Transportation Services by his school counselor who wanted to encourage him to gain independence through the use of public transportation. Jimmy signed up for the program and was assigned to Elizabeth, a skilled Travel Trainer with years of experience workin...g with individuals with disabilities and senior citizens. During training, Elizabeth noticed that Jimmy’s anxiety impacted his ability to wait for the bus and when to push the stop button while on the bus, so she focused on helping him overcome those barriers. They spent a week together taking the bus to and from Chaffey College, learning two routes, going over safe street-crossing skills and understanding proper bus etiquette. After a week of one-on-one training, Jimmy successfully completed Travel Training and is now riding public transportation to and from college. Congratulations Jimmy!
