Vallejo Street By Street 08.11.2020

Our new online homes --

Vallejo Street By Street 01.11.2020

You are invited to attend a 1-hour Annual General Meeting for New Pacific Studio, EIN 943370813. Open to the public. RSVP [email protected] Date: Thursday January 30, 2020 Place: Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, 734 Marin Street Vallejo Time: 1.30 pm-2.30 pm. Champagne and finger food will be provided to toast an anonymous donation for $2,000 received in support of a program in public health and a Vallejo Riverwalk Fellowship.... Programs supported by New Pacific Studio since 2003 include artist residencies, Open Days and public outreach programs such as Vallejo Multicultural Coalition, Vallejo Street by Street, Friends of Old Sperry Mill and (from 2017) Vallejo Historic Napa Riverwalk. Memo: Vallejo Street by Street( created 2015) is proposing to remove its community garden on Valle Vista next month, sadly acknowledging the 'pavement' is still a disaster and a no-go area for the many pedestrians. Our garden wood surrounds have been constantly run over by trucks in the adjoining business, and there is no effective sidewalk on that side of Valle Vista between Sonoma and Couch Street. We tried. We failed. Instead, we are launching an international 3-year Sister Streets project linking Georgia Street, Vallejo with Lark Lane, Liverpool and Jackson Street, Petone, New Zealand. Details to come!

Goodbye to Valle Vista: Vallejo Street by Street proposes closing down its community garden on Valle Vista, which has run for the past four years. New Street: We plan to focus our attention for the next three years ( 2018 -2021) on Derr Avenue, which runs left along the shore at the bottom of Lemon Street. Next to a future Riverwalk and the Sandy Beach just north of Sperry Mill. Monthly beach clean-ups and dusk vigils are in planning. And an application to Participatory Budgeting for a Sandy Beach upgrade. Please read and consider signing this petition, which now has over 250 signees, online and on paper. Thank you, Vallejo supporters of our vision of a healthy and sustainable economic future as a destination city !

Pleased to report that new signage is up at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery, one of our three historic cemeteries( along with Mare Island Naval Cemetery and the Carqu...inez Cemetery on Benicia Road). It is a beautiful space with many fine views looking east and west. Because of years of prior neglect, there is still plenty of remedial work to be done, including restoring a water system, fixing broken fencing, dead trees, uncovering semi-buried gravestones etc etc. But the new management is clearly on the way, bravo! Sacramento Old City Cemetery and Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland are models on how to preserve such 19th century spaces as beautiful green civic memorials. So much history can be explored here from studying individual gravestones.Today this memorial stone led me to Wikipedia to learn about the 19th c. fraternal organization of Woodmen, whose stones carry the words 'Here rests a woodman of the world.' Some kind person has added new plants to our 3 year old planting box on Valle Vista. Might that be you, Ford Monroe?

Looking forward to next Sunday's discussion. The sunset view is from the bottom of Sandy Beach Road in South Vallejo, looking across to the South Mare Island shore, with Mt Tamalpais in Marin county on the horizon.

Sad News! The lovely plant box created by Ford Monroe has been driven into! Both ends broken and geranium crushed beneath a wheel.

Vallejo Street by Street says goodbye and a thousand thanks to Ford Monroe, who has transformed the Valle Vista flower box over the past 18 months. Ford is shortly moving out of town, so we are looking for a kind volunteer or two to offer to share the watering once or twice a week. Au revoir, Ford, enjoy creating your new garden! We'll miss you and your great community spirit! lease phone or email Kay 707-563-5166 [email protected]

Stage 2 started today! -- Jet lag rolled back, so after 5pm I headed to Lemon Street and the beautiful South Vallejo shore with camera, pen and notebook, rea...dy to make appointments for story-collecting for 'Vallejo Living City: Stories of Lemon Street and its Neighborhood.' Birds were singing, no traffic. Knocked on one door (Katie's). Held three great conversations with locals, was offered one delicious freshly-picked sweet blackberry (thank you, Jesse and Sylvia), and have meetings set up from Tuesday morning on. This 6 -months project combines Vallejo Street by Street (planting and gardening)Friends of the Old Sperry Mill (memory-sharing), Vallejo Multicultural Coalition and New Pacific Studio- Vallejo (story-collecting). Bring us your stories and your photos! [email protected] (To find Vallejo, go east from San Francisco- it's at the northeast corner of the bay, at the junction of the Napa and Sacramento Rivers. Midway between San Francisco and the Napa Valley.) The last image is looking down on the old Sperry Mill site from a pocket park -Eugene Waggoner Park- on the cliffs above. Fierce winds blow south along the strait. Those winds were never a problem for the old flour mill, since all its operations were enclosed. Imagine those winds hitting 40 foot high open piles of metal waste(slag) from Chinese steel mills. Think chromium 6. Think polluted Napa River and bay. Think cancer. Let's choose sustainable development instead.
