This circa 1860 #ChinaTradePainting, "Macao" gives a glimpse into the past of a once important #HongKong trade harbor that has since been filled in & built over. A British Sidewheel Steamer is in the port of #Macao, surrounded by more than 20 Chinese vessels. The painting is very detailed, and shows some people on the shore who may be practicing the ancient art of #QiGong or #TaiChi. Chinese artists produced paintings for their nautical visitors. Paintings of Macao are substantially rarer than other views. #ThrowbackTuesday #maritimeart #ChineseSchool For more info: http://bit.ly/Vallejo3

Calling in her dories through a thickening fog, the Lunenburg Grand Banker ALCALA, is beautifully portrayed by Nova Scotia sea painter Jack L. Gray. Gray’s earthy depictions of maritime life are regularly sought after for their realism and narrative excellence. Gray spent several years working aboard boats. He traveled to New York aboard his 15-foot skiff named S.O.B, which, for a time, also served as his studio. An 1835 #painting by William John Huggins titled "The Northern Whale Fishery." Before the days of #NationalGeographic artists braved the cold to make engravings and paintings that depicted the trials and triumphs of #whaling - including boiling down the blubber to make fuel. Look at those #glaciers. Brrrrr! For more information please visit: http://bit.ly/vallejo1 #MarineArt #TakeMeBackTuesday #history
