In the month of October, we celebrate Filipino/a/x American History Month (FAHM)! October was chosen to celebrate and commemorate the arrival of the first Filip...inos who landed in what is now Morro Bay, California, on October 18, 1587. Today is also the birthday of Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong. He joined other Filipino American manongs (older brothers) such as Peter Velasco and Philip Vera Cruz who built the United Farm Workers of America alongside Cesar Chavez and his Latino colleagues such as Dolores Huerta and Gilbert Padilla. In 2004,the JTS Northside Community Center was expanded and renamed Jacinto "Tony" Siquig Northside Community Center in honor of a local Filipino American community leaders in San José. After almost two decades, the community center blossomed into a busy hub of community meetings, activities and functions. As the City of San José is home to a vibrant and diverse population, we have strong ties to the Filipino/a/x community. #FAHM
