2020 USSSC+DAE is cancelled. Much to our chagrin and due to circumstances beyond our control, the U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition will go on hiatus for 2020. The Port of San Diego and all of us involved in producing the event regret that this decision had to be made. Downtown piers must be kept open to handle any contingencies that may arise from the devastating effects of the Covid-19 virus on the world’s cruise industry. Here in California, eve...n after stay-at-home regulations are lifted, social distancing may preclude high-density attendance at major events for much of the remainder of the year. Organizers will contact sponsors and vendors who have committed funds and either refund any fees paid or apply them to future events at the requestor’s option. We thank them for their support. Stay safe! We hope to return this world-class festival to San Diego in 2021. In the meantime, support your local artists, sand and otherwise. We cannot express with mere words how much we miss you ALL. We desperately miss all of our Sand Artists, our Vendors, our Artists, our Bands, our Team & our great Volunteers. We’re heartbroken not to see the reactions of the many appreciative Fans. We miss the beautiful Port of San Diego, the sunrises, the breezes, the passing ships, the sunsets and the lights of the City. Our stance on COVID 19 Labor Day Weekend sand sculpting event to be conducted as scheduled. The effects of this virus are expected to peak during April, 2020. Our hearts go out to all during this time: People who are afflicted first, but then all those indirectly affected as well, including folks who make their living in the travel, hospitality and event businesses. The hardships are real. We are personally involved. The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge (USSSC) and Dimen...sional Art Exposition (DAE) is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 5-7 this year. The venue is the open-air portion of the Waterfront, jutting out into the Big Bay of downtown San Diego. We understand that infectious disease experts do not expect significant outbreaks of the disease during the late summer months. We are continuing to plan for this iconic event. Our routine activities during the Spring are selection of artists and solicitation of sponsors who wish to take advantage of the large audience on-site and massive media coverage. (Sponsors who opt for unique sand sculptures may expect up to 90 million or more impressions via TV, web and print.) We fully expect the USSSC+DAE to take place as scheduled. But if we are forced to cancel the event due to COVID 19, we will either refund any fees paid or apply them to future events at the requestor’s option. In the meantime, please refer to medical professionals who suggest that you do things like wash your hands often; fist or elbow bump; use knuckles to push buttons; open doors with closed fist, hip or paper towel; cough or sneeze into disposable tissues and safely discard; and use sanitizer after handling gas pump handles or touching other contaminated objects.
